Problems buying parts

Post by klingenfelter » Fri May 04, 2007 10:29 am

Most of the stuff could be purchased at pcalchemy. However, I found that the Stuff.

Silverstone LaScala LC-20M
Asus M2NPV-VM -- mATX / AM2 / nForce 6150 + nForce 430
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Lima 2.4GHz 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor, ADD3500CNBOX (35 Watts at low voltage)
2 gigabytes DDR2 Memory
Silverstone ST30NF Fanless PSU
Generic DVD CD Player
NEXUS REAL SILENT CASE FAN SP802512L-03
Scythe ANDY SAMURAI MASTER 6 Heat Pipes CPU Cooler
Western Digital Scorpio WD1200BEVS 120GB

However, they did not have the 35watt version of the AMD CPU. In fact the only supplier I found was memory4.com at $275. I selected the 62 watt version.

Also the guy at pcalchemy noted the the Seagate DB 35 series drive is just as quite as the Western Digital unit. I've searched this site can find nother on "Seagate DB 35". Does anyone know anything about this HDD?

DB35 Series info page
These hard drives are intended for use mainly in DVRs and home media servers; seeing as acoustics are a factor in these environments, they should be ideal for those seeking a quiet PC build. It consumes ~8W of power, and noise is rated at 27-28 dB.

Note this is almost twice as loud as the Scorpio, depends on your ambient whether it'll be noticeable.

Thanks

I'll Stick with the quieter one. I don't need much space as the media is on another networked computer with 1TByte of space. So the smaller Western Digital is find.

Does anyone know what the problem is getting the 35 watt version of the AMD Athlon 64 3000+

you mean 3500+.IIRC it's only for laptops/OEMs (hence the name Energy Efficient Small Form Factor) so for SFF PCs.BTW, the ADD3500CNBOX is not a Lima CPU.

You’re right no Lima in the part description. The correct manf. P/N is ADD3500CNBOX. This is from AMD's web site verified by a human tech service guy. The only source I can find for this is www.memory4less.com at $260.

AMD sales rep. suggested that I try to special order it from Newegg. However, all I got from Newegg in their response to my inquiry was confusion.

Yeah, Newegg has to buy processors by the lot, so a special order means having 999 other chips to sell to other dudes. Which is funny, because AMD sent me an X2 6000 for our testbench and it came in a 1000-piece box.

One little processor, big big box :)

690 chipsets consume way less power than MCP6- chipsets, BTW.

most reports show a couple watts difference at most, which is negligible in most setups:

nVidia 6150 vs. AMD 690G
