Seasonic X-650 - buzzing

Post by 40974111 » Sat Jun 05, 2010 3:22 am

I have a Seasonic X-650 and it worked perfectly up until about a week ago.

I've had no issues to suggest that the PSU is unstable. Yet.l

However, it has developed a strange electrical noise. Buzzing is probably the wrong word for it. What I can liken it to is a sporadic and quieter version of a lightning machine going off.

(While it is annoying from a noise front (as the only 2 other audible noise sources are 2 AC12025 PWM fans at 450rpm each), I'm more concerned about the safety of the system.)

What would have caused this sound to start?
Should I be worried about it?
Whats the likelihood that the power supply will die?

If you can rule out that it isn't some brief noise related to the fan turning on just for a few seconds then it's probably cause for concern and a reason to contact the supplier or Seasonic directly.

It didn't occur with a specific application, would happen in office apps, stats programs, windows environment, games.

It happened at both idle and load.

I put the PSU in for assessment with the retailer last Saturday, I got an email the next Friday saying that they had a new one ready for me to pick up. Probably won't get to pick it up to next Saturday. This suggests that they were getting the problems too, I'll speak to them when I go and pick it up.

[I am 40974111, I can't manage to log in on that account, reset the password, etc.]

I wanted to update this.

The problems occured with the next power supply too.

Then other things in the house started to develop a buzzing noise, and cutting out.

It turns out the whole houses wiring needs replacing, and according to the electrician everything is in a horrible state. It seems that Seasonic X-650 was sensitive enough to pick up on electrical problems in the other circuits in the house.

Despite the houses electricity problems, the power supply never once cut out (even though most other home appliances did). So an A+++ to Seasonic on this one.

Thanks for the update! I own an X-650 as well, so very happy to hear it wasn't the power supply.
