How far back do you Guys/Gals suggest going to get a real silent pc?
What I was thinking was some K6 amd or so and am pretty lost as which way to go.
What I want is buy or mod an older machine, just for low end gaming nostalgia.
Something that is silent, or almost totally and that I can run like Q1, and other low end games on, but still enjoy some degree of silence.

TIA

If you want an older machine that'll run some games (max. = UT2k4), I'd definately suggest buying a prebuilt system off ebay and then paying an extra $50-$100 making it silent. I mean, you can easily get a complete gaming rig for under $500. Add some mo money for monitor, speakers, etc.

If you go back far enough, the Via processor starts becoming an acceptable option.

I believe the era of games he is wanting to play would warrent a trip to your local thrift store or used computer store. You should be able to pick up a P2 or lower machine at any of those places for under a couple hundred bucks, I have found many a P200 machine at my local haunts for 50-100 bucks.

As for silencing Spend a few bucks on a good case fan and a PS and you are set, everything else should run fanless. Your only battle will be dealing with the HD noise really.

3D Wolfenstein the old old school classic ( fit on a single 3.5" floppy if I remember) was the best.

Another good one was Ultima 6 (I believe it was 7 or 8 5.25" floppys)

oh the memories

Thanks Guys, the whole idea is just a nostalgia trip and anti-Doom3 upgrade. I hate how we always tow the line to the latest ID creation.

Now it is up to convincing my gf two computers are not bad, I pretty much got her convinced my current athlon is saving so much money now it is near siletn, some women think computers eat up so much kilowatts per hr. Shakes head.......
