fanless PC...which CPU/mobo?

Post by hwsboss » Fri Sep 03, 2004 2:54 pm

Ok, I need a second PC, so I can have something to test client server type stuff on, and to give a few extra folding cycles while it is doing nothing...maybe I will use it as a mail server. but probably wont.

no case, small hard disk, no monitor or CD rom (except when installing it) Win 98, some kind of VNC software (to control it) and folding software.

thats it. oh, and an ethernet cable to the PC.

now, what could I use as the base?

remember, the pc will have no case, so air is not restricted!
having the CPU cooled passivly is important.

one of them VIA 1.2ghz thingies...fanless? surely the stock heat sink can be replaced by one that can cool it with no fan...one of them circuit board style PSUs (fanless)

or, a mobile 2600+ barton, after underclocking?

or, a P4/celeron job?

Using a VIA Epia MII 12000 is the easiest solution. See http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/quietcubid/ how to change the heatsink.

This will give you a little over 100 PPW if run 24/7.
