Silent A64 system

Post by bsoft » Thu Jan 13, 2005 3:22 pm

I'm looking to put together a nice quiet Athlon 64 system. Here's what I've purchased so far:

Antec SLK3700-BQE Case
Seasonic Super Tornado 300W PSU
AMD Athlon 64 2800+ (Newcastle) CPU
Zalman CNPS-7000ALCU Heatsink
Gigabyte GV-N68128DH Fanless GPU
1GB PC3200 DDR
DFI LanParty UT NF3 250GB Motherboard

Anything missing? I have everything but the Gigabyte card and Seasonic PSU right now. It's running great. I originally planned to use the Antec PSU but it's a bit noisy. The Zalman is shut off by the motherboard when the CPU drops below 50C, so there's no noise there.

I'm looking at doing HDD suspension next.

Get the SLK3000B and save yourself the money on the PSU. The 3000B also has other improvements too.

Rather than the Zalman I'd go with a Thermalright XP-90 or 120 which gives you the choice of fan and you can swap the fan for something else too. I'd recommend either the Nexus 120mm or 90 mm Real Silent fan.

I'd like to use the XP-90 with a 2800+ Newcastle too, but Thermalright's web site says it is "supported" only with a 3200 or above (this is for slot 754 for both).
Why would that be? are the processors physically different that it cannot actually be used or is just a "not tested - not supported" deal?

Might want to replace the chipset fan.

They're just saying that they've tested it for processors up to a 3200, but higher-rated ones would work too. If they're the same socket type, yours will work just fine.
