pc riser card performance?

Post by ghostboarder » Sun Jan 16, 2005 8:14 pm

Hey guys i have been looking at some of the Silverstone HTPC style cases, and im wondering. Does using an AGP/PCI riser card affect performance at all? Ie. is there a performance hit for using a riser card? If not, some of those more slim line type cases (like the LC 04 or 08) would make a nice HTPC/ubergaming case! Opinions please :D

seeing as they're (PCI risers at least) used in many commercial 1U servers im pretty sure the performance loss is minimal, if at all noticable.

AGP risers should be similar i guess.

i think it's a signal noise issue though. longer AGP interface = greater exposure to EMI.

if you're building a hardcore gaming case, i'd think twice about using a small case & AGP-riser combo. temperature and performance might be affected.

however, if it's a home theatre PC it shouldn't be an issue.

I think performance degradation would come in the form of errors (which would be pretty serious, like crashing). However, this is probably a non issue unless you get an obscenely long PCI or AGP riser.
