Ninja Inside a 4U Rackmount?

Post by SD-Plissken » Wed Mar 28, 2007 7:44 pm

Can it be done?

Case Dimensions are listed below.
19"(W) x 18.5"(D) x 7"(H)

There is no good way to give a yes or no answer for your question, there are just too many variable's.
The Scythe Ninja Heatsink alone is 150mm (6") tall, and has a L & W of 110 (just under 4"1/2). You also need to consider the extra 25mm (1") for the length of the fan, and enough clearance for the H & L of the 120mm (4"3/4) fan.
All I can really say is measure very very very carefully from the top of the motherboard pcb, makeing sure to compensate for the added height of the cpu.

But personally I would consider a different heatsink due to getting the ninja setup in a rackmount might be more hassle then its worth. :?

As the high weight of the Ninja won't hang from the motherboard in a rackmount case I think it would make a better setup than in a towercase.
I'm afraid I would't know if it would fit though. Can't you measure the headroom above the CPU?

Heres the spec of the current case.

Centurion 5 (CAC-T05)
480x 202x 435 (D x W x H) which I loosely translated to inches.
18x7.9x17(D x W x H)

It would seem on par with the specs of the case listed before.

And the Centurion 5 (CAC-T05) is not the biggest case around, and the ninja fit it with room left.

I take it mounting the ninja in a 4u rack mount is not possible?

Heatsink Dimensions:110 x 110 x 150mm
480x 202x 435

ok, technically it will fit in a 4U rackmount. however, a 3U rackmount falls short.

the main problem is that i've worked with 4U rackmounts, and they don't actually feel that deep once the system is put in. try to measure from the top of the CPU to the top of the case, you need to have no less than 155mm, 15.5CM or 10.5 inches. reason for the extra give is for room for the top of the case to go on.

and yes, i do agree that it will be better in a rackmount system, as the base will be under almost no stress vertically. check your dimensions personally to make sure, trusting a company's measurements to fall short in the end will just be a waste of time and money.

This is the Dimensions: 480x 202x 435 of the case that currently houses the machine

This is the Dimensions 19"(W) x 18.5"(D) x 7"(H) of the case it was going in to.

Which after some measuring seems like it would fit, however it seems it would be tight in regards to the hight.

I was wondering if any of the forum users have manage to get the ninja to fit in a 4u.

And changing the heat sink to fit the build as one poster suggested is out of the question.

thats perfect...my inches were a little off because i did the math wrong by a lot, the ninja is actually 6.5" not 10.5...either way, you have roughly half an inch leeway for the Ninja.

one thing that needs to be know is how high the heatpipes are off the surface of the last fin. that number needs to me 1CM or less for the heatsink to fit or something will need to be done to modify the case for the heatsink to fit, as cutting a heatpipe renders it useless.

Thanks for the help. Like i said it looks like it would fit but might be tight. being that i don't have the case i can't tell with out buying it. Thus the reason my questions.

Hard to tell how high the heat pipes are off the surface of the last fin.

ok, i figured it out.

the ninja should work with your build. its dimensions are 110x110x150 because with a 120mm fan on it, the total height including the fan is 150mm. therefore, you should have about an inch or so of room between the top of the fan and the top of the case.

the fan is not mounted at the lowest point, its actually only blowing on the fins, not any of the heatpipes coming right off the CPU.

hope that helped and it actually does work if thats the way you go.
