any way to PHYSICALLY slow fan speed down on old 7800 gtx?

I have a 7800 gtx. it's fine for my needs and I'd rather not buy a new card. but the fan's very loud. software doesn't seem to be able to access/control the speed at all.

I was wondering if there's a physical way I could undervolt the fan or something?

chop off a molex connector and the fan's connector

connect the fan to the molex's 5 V (red+black if I remember correctly)
12V would be yellow+black..

give it a try.
