Hello SPCR, I've been a long time reader and silencer(ite?). I purchased a Thinkpad L420 in August of last year due to my place of work having an excellent contract with them, but in my home office, the noise of the fan has begun to bother me - my work office is too noisy to really notice it come on, but at my nice and quiet home, the fan noise is quite bothersome.

I have decided to sell the laptop and put the money towards a similarly-powered desktop PC. My ideal solution would be a space-saving VESA mounted M350 case, as my office and desk are very small and I would like to keep roughly the same footprint as my Thinkpad, but silence will outweigh size. My build plan is as follows:

Motherboard: ASUS P8H61-I REV 3 (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=62523&vpn ... cture=ASUS)
CPU: Intel Pentium G850 (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=61142&vpn ... ture=Intel)
RAM: 2x4gb of whatever is cheapest when I place my order
Case: Mini-Box M350 (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=37788&vpn ... e=Mini-Box)
PSU: I was thinking the PicoPSU 80w kit with the 60w brick would work, but I am unsure if 60w will be enough
SSD: Kingston SSDNow 30gb

What I am looking for advice on is whether or not the 60w power brick with the PicoPSU will be able to run this system, and whether or not this will run at a reasonable temperature/noise level if it is attached to the back of my monitor. I will need to add a USB wireless-N adapter and a USB bluetooth adapter, and occasionally a bus-powered USB hard drive will be plugged in. System loads will likely be low, but every once in a while I might want to play some old games (like Baldur's Gate, or SNES). All advice is appreciated!

The M350 will most likely be a bit small. It depends on your heatsink and whether you can mount that SSD without the 2.5'' bracket or replace it with a smaller one like a mSATA model. See the other threads.
There are other VESA-mountable cases. Some of them are bundled with a fanless PSU like Morex's.

Fore professional use, you might want a more reliable SSD. If you don't have a UPS, Intel 320s are nice.

I will be using the stock, ultra low profile Intel heatsink that come with the G850. I don't have the case infront of me to measure, but I think that the SSD will clear the heatsink even if mounted directly over top of it.

In regards to the SSD, I already have the Kingston in my Thinkpad, and I use about 6gb of it in total - I don't think I need to spend the money to upgrade at this time. I am still wondering if the 60w brick will be enough, and what the noise level will be like - can anyone comment on these factors? Thank you very much!

The G850 uses the standard height cooler, the low profile coolers only come with the T versions, like i3 2100T / i3 2120T / G530T / G620T / G630T, etc.

I think the 60W might be a little tight... but could work, in my case the MiniMi build (check sig) under prime95 i get around 50W and i3 2100T should consume slightly more... but the mobo plays a good part of it being that low. I personally i would go with 80W, Premium picoPSU-90/6.6A 80W AC-DC

Are you sure? According to AnandTech: "Regardless of thermal rating, the boxed SNB Pentiums come with an ultra low profile cooler"

Checking newegg reviews, seems you are right.

"I recently bought a G620 (non-T) for a project, it doesn't come with the M350-friendly low-profile cooler."
