Quiet SSF midrange gaming pc

Post by k_ogren » Sat Jan 05, 2019 9:51 am

I am hoping to get some feedback on my component choices. I have chosen the Asus board for it's dual M.2 slots. the tower is chosen to fit in the compartment in my desk. Other than that the parts are chosen to work together for a quiet compact gaming and general purpose PC. Thanks for taking a look, and for your thoughts.

Just ordered the memory the motherboard, and the power supply, although I got the G3 due to size constraints in the Nano S that I decided to go with. I am looking at going with the GTX 1070 instead of the 2070. The Gigabyte windforce.

Welcome to SPCR.

Could you speak more on this? Which sides are open/can provide airflow? How much space between case and compartment?

Ryzen is kinda picky with memory, less so the second gen, but still the best memory you can get for ryzen is G.SKILL Flare X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) AMD X370 Memory Model F4-3200C14D-16GFX

On the motherboard, if you like Asus go for it, but one of the best value motherboards for B450 is the MSI B450 Tomahawk AM4 ATX Motherboard, constantly recommended by many value builders,

On the GPU, regardless if its RTX2070 or the GTX1070, try to go with MSI Gaming, its a much quieter card than Gigabyte or Asus, MSI GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING Z and MSI GTX 1070 Ti Gaming 8G.

The compartment is on the lower left and is 10" wide and 20" tall, from the rear there is only the 2" cord hole for air flow. The front came with a door but I removed it. I have a Lian Li PC7 case in there now, with an i5 system I put together in 2013.

I ordered the Corsair LPX this morning, so hope it is ok.

I ordered the Motherboard this morning, I have had good luck with Asus, MSI, and ASRock. I was looking to get the two M.2 ports. we'll see how important that ends up being. :)

Thanks for the advice I will look into the MSI, I would imagine the GPU is going to be a large part of the noise produced.

Ryzen gen2 is and B450 mobos are much more friendly with memory, what you can encounter is that XMP might not work, and you have to manually dial the timmings and voltage, and in some cases it still doesnt run at the rated speed, i seen a lot of Corsair LPX 3200 being run at 2933 due that its not stable on ryzen at 3200, part of it is that Corsiar LPX uses different suppliers for it, 4.31 usually is samsung bdie, 5.39 if i remember correctly is hynix and 2.32 is micron. I usually buy LPX but used once i can see the ebay user to show the stickers to see the version. Now Gskill Flare, in 3 builds that i have done (2 ryzen and one tr) all have worked with xmp, no issues whatsoever, and the memory is branded for AMD, to what i have read is one of the few memories that i rarely see issues with AMD builds.

I didnt see your post in the morning =(, but i was also mistaken, i though was ATX.

One thing that i didn't see until now is the SSD, the 970evo is a really nice SSD no doubt, but in case you want save some, i recently bought a ADATA SX8200 and its been great, no issues that i can say and its very close to the 970evo performance, that said, recently the pro was released and its rated for 3.5k reads 3k writes... pretty good numbers for $215, XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB, they are calling it the evo killer.

The lack of airflow in the back of the cubby will lead to elevated temps/more noise. I guess if you had a similarly equipped/powered i5 system in there, you've experienced it.

After watching CES nvidia conference, i would avoid the 1070, the RTX2060 is suppose to beat it at $350, thats for the stock card, probably more like $400 for the MSI announces custom GeForce RTX 2060 Gaming Z, they said 15 of January will hit retail, so i would wait a week and see if you can get one of those. Keep an eye on Steve RTX 2060 review compilation thread.

So I ended up getting the MSI B450i gaming plus AC. I recieved the Corsair LPX in the mail today it says it is ver. 5.32. I wasn't really clear on which one I would be hoping for, but that is what I got. If you have any thoughts on what I might be facing please let me know.

I saw that, it was the day after I ordered the 1070. I went with the $299.99 special from gigabyte, the Windforce OC. I really struggled with the decision, but I guess I'll see if it is too noisy for me, saved a few bucks. Still waiting on the harddrive, and the CPU.
