Horrible GPU fan noise
Something horrible happened today, all of a sudden my current PC started to produce horrible noise.
I precisely identified the noise by elimination and then applying slight pressure to the middle of the GPU fan, the noise immediately stopped.
The GPU is Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 5670 1GB.
I separated the fan from GPU but couldn't notice any problem, even if you roll the fan with the finger the noise is not reproduced.
Can this be helped?
P.S.
I decided to wait for ivy bridge stuff so it will be months before I buy a new PC. Also I would like to sell this one so this needs to be fixed either way.

Re: Horrible GPU fan noise
Try an after market GPU cooler
Re: Horrible GPU fan noise
You mean something like this?
It was very easy to separate the fan but I have no idea about that ribbed white stuff beneath, the screws are inverse at the bottom of the card and there are no visible screws at the top..

Re: Horrible GPU fan noise
Are fan mountings for GPUs uniformly designed?
This one has 3 holes in a triangle, it also has a little wire with 3 pins encased in white plastic that goes into the card.

Re: Horrible GPU fan noise
It could be dried bearings in the fan; search for description on how to clean and grease fan bearings.
Re: Horrible GPU fan noise
Wow, if that is the case it would be extremely crappy quality.Zolishoru wrote:It could be dried bearings in the fan; search for description on how to clean and grease fan bearings.
I have 2 case papst 120mm fans running constantly for over 4 years through various configurations without any deviation from when they were new and this card that is almost a year old craps out on me??
BTW, I don't have the slightest clue how to open that circular fan case itself.
Re: Horrible GPU fan noise
Exact model number for the video card would be big help to give advice on how to disassemble, clean and grease the fan; usually you have to remove the heatsink to get access to the fan.Mettyx wrote: Wow, if that is the case it would be extremely crappy quality.

Do you think an oil for sawing machine would work?
Re: Horrible GPU fan noise
Yes; it would be my first choice for oil. Drawback: doesn't last too long(~1 year).Mettyx wrote:Do you think an oil for sawing machine would work?

Here is how to do it:Zolishoru wrote:It could be dried bearings in the fan; search for description on how to clean and grease fan bearings.
