My silent micro computer, need an opinion.

Post by christian0710 » Wed Aug 15, 2012 1:19 am

Hi,

I have had one goal in mind: To assemble a close to silent coputer that takes up little space. Mostly used for school use, but also for gaming a bit.

Case
Fractal Design Core 1000 Mini Tower (fans needed) one 92mm for the back and one 120mm for the side panel.
http://www.komplett.dk/k/ki.aspx?sku=635712

Noctua NF-B9 92mm case-fan
http://www.komplett.dk/k/ki.aspx?sku=362552#links

Motherboard.
ASUS P8Z77-M
http://www.edbpriser.dk/bundkort/asus-p ... 38474.aspx

CPU
Intel® Core i5-3450 Processor
http://www.komplett.dk/k/ki.aspx?sku=660229

Noctua NH-C14 CPU cooler
http://www.komplett.dk/k/ki.aspx?sku=623529

PSU
Netzteil Super Flower SF-600P14PE Golden King PRO Platinum
http://www.computersalg.dk/produkt/9628 ... -flower-sf

Memoru
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 8GB CL9
http://www.komplett.dk/k/ki.aspx?sku=650278

What do you think? Should change the Fractal Design Core 1000 Mini to a Silverstone Temjin TJ08-E Micro Tower which provides spce for up to a 160mm CPU cooler. Then I can buy a noctua NH-D14 but the HDD space will be limited.

Another question: Is it easy to replace a Silverstone Temjin TJ08-E Micro case fan?

It all sounds good.

The CPU cooler is a bit overkill for that CPU, but that's OK, maybe you can run it super slow with one fan.
Don't know much about the Fractal 1000, but it seems OK, and you're swapping out for batter fans anyway.

Why do you need a 600W PSU? This system may be around 100W consumption and at that low % power you would get substantially worse power efficiency than what you might expect from a lower power unit. A high quality smaller PSU would be better such as the Seasonic X-400.

If you are doing a little gaming would you consider a graphics card as an upgrade down the line? This would increase power consumption but still a 300-400W PSU would be more than sufficient and more efficient than a 600W even if it is Platinum rated.

Have you considered an Antec NSK 3480? This is a little smaller.

Do you need the expansion space for a graphics card or not? If you don't, take a look at Mini_ITX cases or a Shuttle.

I have a Silverstone SG03 case which is creatively arranged to run quietly in about as small a space as you can with a uATX motherboard, fullsize PSU and graphics card. If you can go for an SSD then it can be practically silent.

I'm no fan of the Core 1000. Because of the 92mm fan in the back.

I have build a 1080p modest gaming rig (3-Core AMD, 4th core activated, ATI5770 + additional stuff, cooled by a Xigmatek-Clone of the 212) with a nearly identical case, the front is different and you have no USB3 front ports, but a free 3.5 bay, but it has room for a 120mm fan in the back. But for spcr be prepared to switch all stock noname case fans to something running more silent.

Given that your case is relatively small, a big tower cooler makes assembly a bit tricky. And a modular PSU helps reduce the cabling chaos.

I recommend the TJ08-E but if you want it to be quiet you will need to have some kind of suspension for the HDD and undervolt the front 180mm intake. Also if you want superquiet you might need to change the front 180mm fan and softmount it.

Since you are using iGPU it should have potential to be a very quiet system.

HD: What will you be using? An since you live in Denmark, you can but an aftermarket suspension system very cheaply (150 DKK (sending included)) if you order it from Germany. I've done it and it works marvelously.

CPU cooler: Remember, it's only a 77 W CPU. You can save a lot of money by buying a Scythe Katana 3 (though, check if it fits). The Scythe Samurai ZZ will also save you some cash, and it's a blow down cooler. Both of these will cool the CPU easily (just check the SPCR reviews)

Case fan: 92 mm, you can save some money on this Nexus Realsilent 92 mm (highly regarded by SPCR)
http://www.debusy.dk/160372-160372.html
Debusy also sell the Scythe Quiet Drive 2,5" for 224 DKK. They also sell a Scythe Slipstream 800 rpm for 47 DKK. ( in stock) At 5 V, it's dead silent.
http://www.debusy.dk/154613-154613.html

I've ordered things from debusy.dk some times now, and they've only messed up once. I contacted them via phone, and they solved the problem quickly. And there was no waiting in line on the phone.

Case: The Temjin relies on the 180 mm fan which can not be undervolted enough to be SPCR quiet (can it fit a 140 mm fan in front). And it's also expensive in Denmark. I think the Fractal Design core 1000 is good enough, especially for the price: The 120 mm side fan will aid video card cooling if you upgrade and 92 mm fan instead of 120 mm in the back is not the biggest issue in the world.
The Antec NSK-3480 is quite expensive overpriced in Denmark.

Hi guys, I made some small changes regarding yours and other peoples thoughts + reading a bit: Changing to a
Silverstone Temjin TJ08-E Micro Tower with a NH-D14 Fan instead. It will make a good horizontal circulation.

Silverstone Temjin TJ08-E Micro Tower
http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=303

Motherboard.
ASUS P8Z77-M
http://www.edbpriser.dk/bundkort/asus-p ... 38474.aspx

CPU
Intel® Core i5-3450 Processor
http://www.komplett.dk/k/ki.aspx?sku=660229

PSU
Netzteil Super Flower SF-600P14PE Golden King PRO Platinum
http://www.computersalg.dk/produkt/9628 ... -flower-sf
Ram

Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 8GB CL9
http://www.komplett.dk/k/ki.aspx?sku=650278

Noctua NH-D14 CPU Køler
http://www.komplett.dk/k/ki.aspx?sku=512803

This aftermarket suspension system you are talking about, How does that work? So perhaps ditch the HDD bays in silverstone case (they won't be able to contain any HDD's with my NH-D14 CPU fan) and put in some kind of suspension system?

Can i undervolt the Case fan with the Noctua resistor (700rpm) cord? I know Asus motherboard comes with software to reduce RPM for fans.

You could use both together but beware that you might have starting voltage issues. The Asus motherboard control should be OK on it's own.

Why still the 600W PSU?

Well, when you mount a hard drive in a regular fashion, the vibration coming from the hard drive carries over to the rest of the case. The vibration for, say, the side panels, creates some noticeable noise. A suspension system is basically some elastic cords that makes sure that the vibration from the hard drive doesn't carry over to the rest of the case. There's no "metal-to-metal" contact

A photo can be seen in this link:

http://www.google.dk/imgres?um=1&hl=en& ... 4,s:0,i:84

You could also buy some elastic cord in a sewing shop (Stof2000 for example) and make your own suspension system. If you're uncomfortable with that, you can buy an aftermarket solution. Let me give you the link to noisemagic.de:

http://www.noisemagic.de/home.php?artik ... 888%253D29

If the rubber rings break you can even buy replacement rubber rings for 3-4 euros. That's how I like it :)

Another Core 1000 clone with 120mm fan in the back.

And if you plan on using side fans, then there's not enough clearance for most of the 120mm fan tower style cpu cooler.

That "clone" looks really similar to the Cooler Master Elite 341.
