Options for basic VESA mount system?

Post by ist.martin » Thu Nov 22, 2012 10:41 am

Hi all:

I'm trying to get my head around the current options for a simple VESA mount system. All I need is a MB, simple CPU ($55 Celeron G555 class) 8GB RAM and a single SSD to house Win7 and data. I am happy with a USB WiFi (eg Asus USB-N13).

I was going to go with an Antec ISK110, Intel DH77DF, G555, Kozuti cooler, 256 GB Plextor SSD - but I have been scared off by the very high SSD drives being reported with the ISK110 design - http://www.anandtech.com/show/6192/ante ... -it-gets/5

In my current system, high SSD temps have been a problem, and I'd really like to find a small VESA mount solution that does not cook the SSD.

The only options I have found are:

* Mini-Box M350. It doesn't seem to support standard coolers or a Kozuti. Would it be quiet enough? Also, with PicoPSU, it's twice the price of an ISK110.
* Zotac ZBox-ID82-U . Barebones system based on i3 2330M. Not much info on this one - no idea of SSD temps or noise.
* New Intel NUC. Actually, I am not sure if it is VESA mountable, but it looks like a good system. I already have a 256 GB Plextor SSD, so I'd like to not have to buy a mSATA drive as well, but this might be an option. G555 is just 20% faster than a 3217U.
* Asaka Euler based system. Not sure on cost or availability of case. But I'm leery of high SSD temps, as it's passive cooling is very similar to my current CappucinoPC which has fried two SSDs.

Has anyone come up with a silent, SSD-cool, VESA mount system? What are other VESA mountable options?

I do not own this case but have seen it on Newegg.

Here's a picture of it mounted on the back of a monitor.

Good luck.

20C above ambient? The SSD is not being "cooked"!
An unusual SSD with a high ambient temperature might get too hot but most SSDs are supposed to be OK in laptops, many of which have terrible cooling for their drives.
It seems your concern is unwarranted.

Another route: Get a m-ITX board with eSATA and just velcro the SSD to the outside of the case :)
