Seasonic 850 Gold run this many drives ?

Post by meridius » Thu Dec 13, 2012 4:20 pm

Hi all

I am building a server and in the next year or so i am going to place 14 hardrives in it all WD green 3tb

there will only be a i3 ivybridge 55w chip in there no gfx card as that will run from the chip, 2 memory sticks ddr3 and 1 pci sata card. would a seasonic 850x gold series run all of this no problems would the psu manage ok.

thanks

As long as you have enough SATA power connectors (or adapters), without a doubt the PSU will be OK.

Most desktop hard drives use less than 10w when running, and about 20w when starting up. With 14 hard drives, you're looking at a worst-case load of about 280w if all the drives are spinning up at the same time. Seeing as even the G-450 can supply approximately 400w on its 12v line (which would be used to drive the motor), you are definitely safe with an 850 power supply.

While there's nothing wrong with getting a very powerful power supply, I would at least think about getting one a little less powerful.

I have 22 drives (not all greens), an SSD, RAID card + SAS expander and a 95 W CPU all running off an X-650. No problems at all. In fact the setup was running off an Antec 430W without problems, but I wanted the better efficiency and modular cables. The X-850 won't have any problems with your setup.
