CPU Cooler suggestion for HTPC case [Noob]

Post by brianblank » Fri Feb 01, 2013 6:39 am

I am looking to make this unRAID setup as quiet and energy efficient as possible:

MoBo: SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813182253

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1265L V2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819117289

Case: Atech fabrication 4000ex case http://web.archive.org/web/201001240440 ... h_4000.htm

PSU: PICOPSU-150-XT http://www.mini-box.com/picoPSU-150-XT

Currently I am running the stock Intel CPU cooler/fan, but it is too loud for my application (Home Theater). From the top of processor to the case lid is about 5.325"(135mm), so that eliminates using any of the 120-140mm tower CPU coolers. I am thinking of running a Noctua NH-U9B SE2 without the fans if possible. If I need a bit more airflow over the CPU cooler, I may duct the 2 80mm fans to the cooler. I have ordered 2 new Noctua NF-R8 fans to replace the loud Papst case fans that are current on the case.

Any CPU cooler feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian
