Platinum Fanless for TJ-08e wuth Core i7-4790?

Post by xaffeine » Tue Sep 16, 2014 3:59 pm

I just got a system with a Core i7-4790 in a Temjin TJ08-e. In low-load conditions, the most audible thing about it is the Antec VP450F power supply. I wish I'd gotten an SPCR-recommended one! :oops:

Would it make sense for me to upgrade to a Seasonic Platinum Fanless 460?

Here is my BOM:
* Core i7-4790
* GeForce gtx 750 ti
* Silverstone Temjin TJ08-e case
* Stock 180mm front intake fan
* Scythe Kama flow 2 rear exhaust fan
* Stock Intel HSF
* Asus Gryphon Z97 mobo
* Antec VP450F PS

My cammi build (Check sig) consumes under prime95 150W, the most you will ever see is aound 200W with a bigger psu, specially since you dont have a dedicate gpu, so the seasonic platinum 400W should be plenty.

Just a warning, some user haver reporte coil whinning on seasonic platinum series, i own two and been perfect, but you never know... as an aternative Corsair rm450 shlound be a good option for your build, cheaper, fully modular and semi passive.

Oops, :oops: , forgot to mention GeForce gtx 750ti.

Still, I am not worried about total power. Just noise and heat at the top of the case.

You should still be fine with 400W with GTX750ti.

One thing worth mentioning is that on my HTPCMi build, that has top mounted PSU with a hole, the noise from the PSU will be noticeble, in my case the X400 if i place my ear right next to the case hole i can hear some electrical buzz on the PSU, but at 1mt its inaudible to me, this sort of things are different on each persons hearing and tolerance. I can tell you also that in my past TJ08-E build, i had an Seasonic X660 (gold) with GTX480 and then GTX580 and then a GTX780, and i never heard my PSU, it usually was off on idle or barely spin up for a minute and then off for some time, even playing games i never really heard it, i had to stand up and take off the filter to see it spinning, as long as you dont get any coil or electrical noise that you can perceive, the seasonic imo are one of the best PSU in the market. That said... some users have reported a lot of coil whining on seasonic platinums, that i personally haven't experience any issues with mine.

Corsair RM450 is also a decent option, should be semi passive most of the time. Kingwin LZP550 should be another good option, reviewed by SPCR and got the editors choice, Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply

I got the upgrade! I don't hear any whining. Just some barely audible grunge-like sounds.

I ran prime 95 for quite a while and was surprised that the seasonic didn't seem to warm up much.

Very pleased so far.

Do you mean "barely audible" over the stock Intel HSF at full load?

Heck, no! I replaced that with Noctua NH-U12s. My ear needs to be within half a meter of this box to hear anything at all.
