Why X79 and six core? if its pure gaming you wont gain much on six core, are rendering, editing or encoding? If you go with an aftermarket cooler for the GPU like Arctic Accelero Xtreme IV 280(X) - High-End Graphics Card Cooler with Backside Cooler for Efficient RAM and VR-Cooling - DCACO-V930001-GBA01, probably wont fit because of the position of the first PCIe 16x and the memory banks.

That PSU should be more than enough for the 280X, my X660 powered a GTX480 fine and to my recollection is the highest single gpu based video card till today. But if you have plans for a Xfire in the near future might be worth considering going up.

well in that case I think I'll go with an aftermarket cooler like that one and just put the GPU in a lower PCIe slot. As for the X79 choice it is partly because this will also be a work machine doing lots of 3d rendering as well as some metal casting modeling software which will take advantage of as many threads and as much ram as it can get so the extra channels will help there and I also just like the idea of the extra headroom with the PCIe lanes.

So I am now considering some other options for the case and I keep changing my mind on which would be best. Cases I am considering are.
Corsair 330r carbide
Antec p100
Antec p280
Fractal Design Define R4
Antec solo II

Out of all of these I would say the solo II is maybe sort of the wild card as it has a top mounted power supply and therefore no top exhaust fan spots. Any ideas on which case would best serve my purposes?

Fractal R4/Antec P280 or maybe Corsair Obsidian 450D (IMO both Antec and Corsair deserve a fan swap, while with the R4 YMMV).

I have seen a review of the Asus X79-Deluxe with the R9 280X and the 4960X CPU. The maximum power draw under load was measured at 475 watts (from the wall). I guess you would might see a bit less than this but potentially it would mean stressing a 660w psu to something like 60 or 70% of its capacity. It could cope but there would certainly be an issue of PSU fan noise at these stress levels. So upgrading to something like the Seasonic 850w would make sense if keeping PSU fan noise down is an issue.

One feature the Antec p280 has is that two intake fans can be mounted on the internal face of the drive cage, which places them directly opposite the PSU and graphics card. Putting fans here would probably be more effective in keeping down graphic card fan speeds and noise than an aftermarket cooler. The p280 is supplied with three fans, but has five fan positions. Given a power setup like this and that the p280 uses 120mm fans it would make sense to fill all the positions.
