Antec Neo HE PSU Users Poll

Post by Rusty075 » Fri Dec 23, 2005 10:37 am

Considering the ongoing reports of issues with the Antec Neo PSU's, and the lack of real hard numbers and concrete information on the failures, it's high time we got one of these polls going for it.

The Rules:

First, read The RULES about Product User Feedback Polls. Do not post here if you have not read that thread.

Second, You must be an owner or user of an Antec Neo PSU! DO NOT POST if you are not a user. Otherwise, polls such as this will become useless and skewed. Anyone found to be breaking this rule will be immediately banned from SPCR. Posting about "some guy you read about at xyz.com" does not help anybody. If your uncle's-cousin's-former-roommate had a problem with their Neo, go tell them to sign up and post for themselves.

Third, give as much of the relevant technical specifics as you can. Such as: the serial number off the PSU, purchase source, and purchase date. Since these failures are related to the motherboards used, also include the make, model, revision, and BIOS version of your board.

ALL Neo users are encouraged to post, including those who have no problems, NOT just the ones who have experienced trouble. If you have had zero problems with an identical (or nearly so) PSU/Motherboard combination, please post your specifics.

Keep your posts CIVIL and ON-TOPIC! This thread is not an excuse for Antec-bashing. Yes, we know you're frustrated, but bashing isn't going to help solve the problem. Given the rather heated opinions raised on these failures already, this thread is going to be moderated very closely. Read the Rules...you don't really want to be the first person kicked out of the forums because you didn't read the rules, do you?

Thanks!

I bought an Antec P150 with a NeoHE 430 on 3/12/05 from Nintek. I first started using it on an ASUS A8N-E (Rev 2.00, 1006 BIOS) and had absolutely no problems. I have since upgraded to the 1008 BIOS and still have no problems. The serial number is S05100032965.

Neo HE 430 / Soltek SL-K890Pro-939

Post by Jim Byram » Fri Dec 23, 2005 9:01 pm

Case: Antec P150
PS: Neo HE 430 #S05090012789
MB: Soltek SL-K890Pro-939 Bios: T1.4, CPU is A64 3500+ Win

This would have been from the first batch of P150s received by NewEgg and was ordered and shipped on 3 Nov 2005.

The power supply works perfectly with this motherboard even after hours of gaming. Using 7800GT.

Neo HE 430
S/N: S05070004005
MB: Soltek SL-K8TPro-939

Worked perfectly until I blew it up by rapidly switching AC power on and off. Failure was entirely due to user error. The failure did not affect any other system components.

Case: Antec P150 (review sample)
PS: Neo HE 430 SN S09050004525
MB#1: Intel 875PBZ, rev 205, BIOS P05, CPU is P4 NW 2.4C
MB#2: Intel 875PBZ, rev 301, BIOS P22, CPU is P4 NW, 3.0C
MB#3: Intel 875PBZ, rev 303, BIOS P34, CPU's have been P4 NW 3.4C, 3.0C and 2.4C
MB#4: Asus P4P800-D, rev A1, BIOS 1008, CPU is P4 NW 3.0C

This particular 430 NeoHE has run 100% perfect with all combinations of boards and CPUs listed above. All were loaded for at least 24hrs with 2xCPUBurn. The rev 303 + P4 3.4C combo was run for almost 5 WEEKS, 24x7 under full 2xCPUBurn load and PSU worked perfect.

I can't bitch about this PSU at all, other than to say that it's not as quiet as my fan-modded Seasonic SS400's.

EDIT: - Finally got around to opening the case (after 3 months) so I could see the serial number of the PSU.

Oh, and FWIW, my PSU's "warranty" sticker came ripped in half too.

A8N-SLI Premium by asus.

the PSU fails the second i start a game or anything else power hungry und the comp just dies.

I don't have the PSU anymore since I RMA'd it allready. however I'm sure i have the S# written down somewhere, perhaps on my dads comp. I'll edit it in at a later time when I'm not so dead tired.

I was trying to plug a Seasonic Power Angel into the same power strip, and it happened to land on the power switch and rock it back and forth a few times.

Got my 430W Neo HE with my P150 in October. (#S05090004022)

Built my rig (with Antec A8N-SLI Premium revision 1.02). Computer powers up and stays on for about 20-30 seconds, doesn't matter what I do. This is with CPU, MB, memory and graphics card only.
Went out and bought a noname "400W" PSU (16A on 12V I think) that powers system in sig 100% stable. After consulting with Antec, they wanted me to update the BIOS on my MB to 1009, which I did. Unfortunately it did nothing to alleviate the problem.

RMAd the Neo HE and got a replacement that should have had the Asus fix built in. Tried it, and the computer will not even power on. The fans spin for a couple of seconds and then they stop, even if I don't connect the graphics card or any hard drives. Seems like some protective circuit is kicking in. Serial number on the second unit: #S05090011340.

Right now, I've notified Antec again about the problem and I'm waiting for an answer...

EDIT: Added serial numbers.

System: P150 case with the standard Antec Neo HE 430 PSU, ASUS-VM-CSM board, AMD X2 3800, 2*1Gb Kingston memory, 3*Samsung SP2004C drives. Other than a DVD writer there are no additional components such as graphics boards, etc.

Behavior: the system will not start up with more than one disk drive connected. If more than one drive is connected, the fans spin for 1 or 2 seconds and the system goes dead. As soon as the additional drive is disconnected [after power down of course], the system is fully functional.

The next day the system didn't power up at all, even with a single drive. I then disconnected the drive, let the PC be powered on for a minute or so, switched off, reconnected the drive and this time it did start up. It seems that the PSU will support a single drive after a brief warmup and none after a cold start, hinting at an overly sensitive protection mechanism.

More details: Purchased at Zercom, Eindhoven, The Netherlands on December 23, 2005 [I also happen to know that the P150 is from a batch that arrived from Antec around December 14]. Serial # [will add later]; Mobo has the latest BIOS [0506 - November 29, 2005]

I have recently bought an Antec PC case model P150 from TopAchat (France). The case itself is perfect but the NeoHE 430 power supply provided with it does not work in my case. The PC simply does not start. The provided case fan and the CPU fan spin for about a second and then they stop. That is all. The PC does not boot at all. I installed my old power supply that is a Q-TEC 350W and no problem: the system works. The PC has a motherboard ASUS P4P800.

Bought a p150 today. SN of psu: S05100035375

With 1 harddrive connected the case-fan will spin for a few seconds then the system dies. It does boot without any harddrive conected and it also boots with a Benq 1640 connected.

I have a Giga-Byte K8NS Ultra-939, so it seems problems are not related to Asus users only.

For the record, to document my vote I copied my own post from this thread: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewto ... 472#232472

In a spirit of scientific inquiry, I tried this experiment: I took out from my existing PC the (working) Antec Truepower 330 PSU, and put in the Antec Neo HE 430 which came with a new P150 case, bought at the end of November.

Nothing else changed: Asus A7N8X-X motherboard, AMD Barton 2500+ CPU, 512 MB DDR RAM, 80 MB HD, a couple of optical drives, ATI Radeon 7500 graphics card. The BIOS is the latest (1010).

Result: the PC would not start. The motherboard LED was lit, showing that the motherboard was powered, the drive LEDs lit up briefly, but the boot sequence did not start.

I put back the original PSU and everything is normal again.

I purchased an Antec NEO HE 430 on the Ebay from an US vendor in mid November. This PSU was brand new.

SN: 05090009353

Motherboard: Asus P5GDC deluxe

When switched on only fans start. My system can't boot up.

I'm waiting news from the Antec Europe technical support.

Motherboard: Biostar TForce 6100 S939

Power Supply: Antec NeoPower HE 430 (odd in conjunction with mATX board and no add-on graphics card, but machine was going to be a file server). Didn't get SN, I returned and exchanged for a different model.

Case: Antec P180

Verdict: Did not work. Supply was giving power on fan cables, at least, since LED on case lit up. However, no power to motherboard, no CPU fan spin up, no motherboard power LED, nothing.

TruePower 380 worked fine (as test), and replaced HE430 with a SmartPower II (I think it was the 500, the modular one) which also works fine.

Two original NeoHE 430s worked fine with nF3-754 board, Intel 478 board, VIA 939 board, etc.

One of these did not work with Asus A8N-SLI Premium and A8N32-SLI Deluxe boards, both fitted with 3800x2 A64. Power up, then shut down in 30~60 seconds.

Replacement PSUs from Antec were received the week before xmas -- works fine with both of the above boards. Both the replacements have broken/cut void warranty stickers, and the serial numbers are:

S05100030798
S05110081185

The S/N of the original: S05090004524

Antec Neo HE 380 would switch off after 2-10 minutes of 3d gaming. It would also switch off once every two hours (approximately) while doing normal applications.

I received a new Psu with "Asus A8N fix" from Antec in Netherlands. It did'nt work either. It had the exact same problem.

I have purchased a Seasonic S12 380 and it works perfectly with the same setup. I also tried a Q-tec 300W, it worked flawlessly too.

I have returned the Antec Neo HE to the dealer for a refund.

My mobo is Asus A8N-E, rev2.00 Bios 1010.004.

Purchase date 2005 11th Nov, from Jmedata Sweden.

Neo HE 550, purchased from NCIX (Vancouver, Canada), late Nov 2005. Serial Number S05090018546.

Used with Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe Motherboard (703 BIOS I think), AMD 4400+ CPU, 2 GB RAM, 3 Hard Drives, 1 optical drive, Geforce 7800 GTX 512MB graphics Card.

System would power up and regular Windows apps were OK, but it would shut down while playing games.

Ancient Enermax 350w would power everything OK, now running a Seasonic S12 following the Neo HE being RMA'd (to NCIX, not Antec).

System: Antec Neo HE 430 PSU bundled with P150 case, ASUS A7V8X-X motherboard BIOS 1013
PSU S/N S05090020377

Behavior: After pressing power button fans spin only for half-second, no boot, no beeps.

Retailer: LDLC, France, shipped on December 12, 2005

More details: Same PSU able to power on properly with an old Abit motherboard. Same Asus motherboard works nice with old Aopen 250W PSU.

To let some steam off: Reported issue both to LDLC and Antec two weeks ago - no response received yet

Failure report

Post by asus user 0432 » Fri Dec 30, 2005 7:21 pm

MB: Asus a8n-sli premium
Bios: 1009
PSP: NeoHe 430W S05100031112

Tried it with no cpu installed and it would cut off after ~0.5sec. The voice output would say "seep<off>" rather than "cpu not installed". Installed Thermaltake TR2 430W and system runs fine.

edit: this one appears to have a broken warranty sticker too

NeoHE 430 + AOpen i915GMm-HFS = very bad idea

Post by ibsmi » Sat Dec 31, 2005 9:41 am

My story:

AOpen i915GMm-HFS based system working fine for about six months in a X-Qpack case. Decided to replace PSU that came with the case with a quieter model, the Antec NeoHE 430.

Removed old PSU, installed new NeoHE, switched on, and the CPU fan twitched, power light came on and nothing else. Checked all connections, tried again, same problem, so gave up.

After re-installing the old PSU the system worked fine as usual, but then after about two hours, the motherboard turned off. Everything else (PSU, HDD etc) remained on.

The system now no longer starts up. The motherboard standby LED is on, the power switch will turn on the PSU, HDD, CPU fan etc but the motherboard doesn't even beep. So I assume the motherboard is dead, probably killed (or at least weakened) by a dodgy NeoHE PSU.

I've wasted my time and lost a £180 motherboard in the process. Not happy!

Ed.

Antec P150 + Neo HE 430 (in case) - sorry, don't have serial number to hand

ASUS P5-LD2 + P4 3.4GHz + Seagate 7200.7 + 2Gb Corsair + 7800 GTX

Built machine, powered up fine, installed XP Pro. Has worked without problems for limited testing. Not run any games or burn in yet (no time...), but no sign of trouble so far.

Failed Neo HE430 power supply in P150 case

Post by NPrincen » Sun Jan 01, 2006 10:36 am

I recently purchased an Antec P150 case that came with a Neo HE430 power supply. The power supply switches itself off after a variable length of time from between one minute and several hours. Upon immediate restart, it will again run fine for a while and then fail. This seems to rule out a thermal cutoff problem because the power supply will restart immediately after failing.

I narrowed the problem to the power supply by first unplugging everything from my motherboard except the video card and keyboard to shed load. The problem persisted. Secondly, I replaced the power supply with an old Sparkle 300 Watt supply that I had on hand and this completely cured the problem. The system runs fine with all devices re-installed on the old power supply.

Here are the specs of the minimum system tested:

Asus A8N-SLI-Premium motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Processor with Stock Fan
XFX GeForce 6600GT Graphics Card
PQI 2x512MB DDR400 Memory

The specs of the HE430 power supply compared to my old Sparkle FSB300-60BT are as follows:

Voltage HE430 Sparkle
+3.3 22A 28A
+5.0 14A 30A
+12.0 3x16A 15A
-12.0 0.8A 0.8A
+5.0SB 2.5A 2.0A

The P150 case was from the first batch received by NewEgg in November. The serial number of the power supply is S05090013027 and had a broken warranty seal when I received it. I have requested an RMA from Antec and will have to see how they deal with this problem.

Broken Seal issue

Post by MikeC » Sun Jan 01, 2006 12:59 pm

re -- The High Incidence of Broken Seals on NeoHE PSUs

This was also found of two of the four replacement NeoHE I received from Antec. When I inquired whether they had been reworked/fixed units, Antec said no, they were brand new. Apparently the seal, which goes at the seam between the top and bottom halves of the PSU, gets broken sometimes when the shipping package is dropped or the PSU gets twisted in some way.

They are going to change this so that the seal covers a cover screw hole instead in order to stop the seal from getting broken accidentally.

i bought an AMD 3800+ X2, ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe mobo, XFX Force 7800GT and an Antec NeoHE 500watt PSU all new as an upgrade for a socket A mobo setup that just died.

The first problem i had was when i tried to benchmark my video card after setting up my new rig for the first time in 3dMark05. It reset itself before it could complete the first test. :( I couldnt get it to complete the first test in 3dmark05. I thought id do another full reinstall and see how i went. it was better. But i still had problems. Basically at first i though i had a dodgy video card. Further investigation and customers from work ( i work in a PC store) pointed to my PSU to being the cause of my problems. Other customers were returning their brand new NeoHE's woth the widely reported problems that people have been reporting on the net (and with boards other than ASUS also).

The BIOS that shipped with my mobo was 708. Updateing to 1009 helped, it would no longer reboot just browsing the net but it would still reboot/switch off in games and in x64 Windows .

I have tried to RMA my PSU directly with Antec but I am still waiting for a reply. The distributor in Australia for Antec was clueless when i rang them about the problem. They asked me to point them to news of the problem.

I am still haveing issues. I am waiting for everyone to reopen from the Christmas holidays. I hope i can get it resolved at no expense... :?

By the way i tested the Voltages with my digital multimeter. All voltages on all rails were VERY solid and WELL within tolerances. ( i couldnt test the amps as my multimeter isnt good enough. the most it could measure was 10A without blowing up.)

I tried both NeoHE psu's, the 500w model, and the 550w "updated" sent by antec from netherlands. MB A8N-SLI (tried with some bios, 1006, 1009, 1011b I guess) Geforce MSI NX-7800GTX, 1hd, 1 cd-rom, ect...)
Sorry but serial number aren't available (I don't want to open the boxes again :p)

500w : the pc shutoff after 15-30 seconds, even staying into bios.
550w updated : It seem working well, but cannot connect an sensitive portable hd in usb2 (which requiring constantly all of the 500mA of an usb port) and values are very instables : A8nSliNeoHE550wFix.PNG
400w noname (20pins...) : work well, giving enough power to the portable hd via usb2 port.

Neo HE 550

Post by Crusher » Mon Jan 02, 2006 10:44 am

I bought an Antec Neo HE 550 (sorry no SN) along with an Asus A8N32-SLI, an AMD64 3700 and a XFX 7800GT to upgrade an ancient system. I put it all together and fired it up, set BIOS settings, and started installing WinXP Pro. It was half way through a disk format when it shut off (about 1 hr total). I started it again, it shut off in 6 min.
So I went and read some forums and updated the MB BIOS to 1009. I thought it fixed it, because it worked for approx 2 hrs. Then it shut off again. I am also running 2 WD 250GB hard drives (not raid), a DVD burner and an Audigy2.
After trying to work with Antec tech support and getting nowhere for 3 days, I took the Neo back where I bought it and purchased an Enermax Noisetaker 600w and my system has been rock solid ever since.

This seems highly unlikely. Any twist sufficient to break that seal would have ripped the top off.
