Ginseng tablets

More popular than ever, but some are still very noisy.

I recently went through a similar process but with slightly different requirements. I have ended up with a Centrino based laptop with the Fujitsu MHT2060AT hard drive. I don't know if this has more platters than the 40GB version but it is very rare that I hear it. I do feel the heat from it though as it is mounted under the palm rest. I hate to think what a 7200rpm disk would be like. When the Pentium M processor drops to 600MHz on battery power, it runs completely fanless.

I also now have a (nearly) silent server based on a fanless mini-itx EPIA motherboard. This is powered by a fanless power supply and contains a Toshiba MK8025GAS hard disk. Again, I think this contains two platters whereas the MK4025GAS contains one (so probably no noise reason for going for the MK2025GAS) The disk is mounted within a foam frame (although this is probably not necessary). The server sits on my desk, less than 1 metre from where I sit. The only time I can hear it, is in the middle of the night when I sit still for a couple of minutes and really concentrate on the server.

So in summary, I run both Fujitsu and Toshiba disks and both are very very quiet. I have no complaints about either and for the first time in ~3 years, I have no desire to buy or quieten anything else.[/url]

Thanks, I'll try to find out if I can get a MOtion M1400 with the mentioned hard drives (although I'm afraid I might forfeit the warranty if I switch the HD).

I am still thinking howevver about the possibility of a flash drive. There seem to be issues with limited erase/write cycle number, but is it nevertheless possible to have the OS installed on a flash drive (USB or PC Card) with the roght BIOS?

I've just bought (through ebay) a Dell C400. (1.3G centrino). It's pretty quiet as most of the time it runs fan-free, and when the fan does kick in it's for a short time (a minute or less, at least up to now) and isn't nearly as loud as some other laptop fans I've heard.
I can hear the drive (40G IBM travelstar 4200RPM) on seek and can faintly hear it if I'm in a very low noise environment (like my house, late at night, in the winter with windows closed and snow piled up on the ground). No idea what that would measure as. I'll probably replace this drive with a larger-capacity Fujitsu 4200RPM as I've one in a compact flash reader and it's only audible if I put the housing within about 3" of my ear.
Hoping this helps a bit (and thanks to this forum - only reason I went looking for a notebook with a centrino in it...)
