I was recently looking to buy a netbook and what struck me is the fact that so few of them are fanless. I mean, with so little power do they really need fans? Especially in the case of netbooks with VIA CPUs for eg rather than Atoms.

Added Vaio P to the list (and updated first posts).

Nice thing is that because of Dell, you can grab a fanless laptop for quite cheap compared to 2005 (Mini 10v 300$ vs. Latitude X1 1000+$), bad thing is that Latitude X1 is still better :)

Too bad there is still isn't many models available, hopefully Intel's Pine Trail platform will improve situation in late 2009/early 2010 (basically, it brings Atom N-series platform power consumption closer to Z-series ).
(Z530 + US15W = 4.3W)
(N270 + 945GSE + 82801GBM = 11.8W)
(N450 + something = 7-8W)

Nokia is fanless but no SSD. the screen is smaller at 10.1".

Sony is pure bliss. in addition to being fanless, they topped it with a SSD. 11.1" hits the sweet spot IMO.

i will bet all my carrots on Dell's new Adamo XPS being a fanless SSD affair just like the VAIO X bliss at a better price point.
9.99mm thin wont leave much room for fans.. although i will be one now :D

Esben wrote:I have an Lenovo X300, in which the fan can be controlled by the 3rd party application TPFanControl. With this application, the fan speed can be brought back into control. With the default BIOS setting, the fan often runs at 5500 RPM, even when loaded very little. In TPFanControl, I've set the fan to be off untill CPU temperature reaches 60 degrees. At 70 degrees the fan turns on and runs about 2000 RPM, which is completely inaudible. Only when temperature reaches 75 degrees, the fan speed goes up to 5500 RPM.

By using this application, this once quite noisy laptop is turned into a completely silent machine, 98 % of the time I use it. You can turn off the monitor and leave it at your desk, and you can't hear it's on. Only when the machine is continously loaded, the fan is noticeable.
Thanks for posting this info. I've been looking for something like this for my X300. Can you please detail how you made those settings in TPFanControl?

Sony Vaio X fanless? Nope! (unfortunately...)

Look at the Trustedreviews site the "hands on review" with lots of pictures.
Spot the fan in the laid out picture. (There is an asterisk near "Fan", but there also near "ethernet" and "vga". That mean probably that the fan is for that model only? Don't know...)

That's right, also visible in transparent version:

They did hide the exhaust vent really well. Too bad, it would have been a really nice machine if it was fanless.

update: 2009-12-09 I had a chance to handle Vaio X in a store, the exhaust vent is there. Due to noise environment couldn't say if fan was spinning or no.

Remo were you talking about first-hand experience about the Sony not having a fan? I ask because the posts following yours seem to indicate that it does in fact have a fan.

Remo I just spent 20 minutes on the phone with a Dell tech/sales guy and he confirmed that the Adamo XPS **DOES** in fact have a fan.

New DELL VOSTRO V13

Is there any chance that the new DELL VOSTRO V13 is fanless?

Ask you this question because the case is aluminum (great for
dissipate the heat generated) and the thickness is reduced to
host fans ...

The NEC VersaPro UltraLite Type VS is also a fanless system.
It's a Japan only release NEC netbook for business use. I picked mine up via a local friend from Tokyo.

It's really nice because it's light (700g), features a 64GB Toshiba SSD, has a 1.86 GHz Atom CPU and has a high res 1280 by 768 10.1 inch screen. It's able to resist 150kg of weight (just right for a crammed Tokyo train commute) and has a drop height certification of 78cm. Really nifty netbook with the Intel GMA 500 chipset capable of decoding H264 1080p video with the right drivers. Sadly Intel driver support sucks. Still even in software mode it can do 720p h.264 video. It also has 3x USB, WiFi, Ethernet, Kensigton lock, SD card slot, mic, line out and ext speaker. The build quality is incredible. It's comparable to Panasonic Business Let's Note notebooks.

Anyway, this baby is silent and very thin and light :).

What about notebooks that use Loongson chips?

Is the Gdium Netbook - 10" for example fanless?

There is a Loongson based Nettop that sells for 263 USD. I believe Loongson based netbooks are the only 64-bit netbooks in the world. Gdium Netbook is not coming with fanless cooling technology. Hush Technologies is I thing providing fanless cooling technology.

Sony VPC X11S1E
Intel Atom Z540
11,1" non-glare display 1366×768
fanless, SSD
0,76 kg and VERY thin

My main working computer is a fanless SSD Dell Latitude X1 with Pentium M 733. I don't need much for programming, skype, and tv (with timeshift!), but the Sony VPC X11S1E might be to weak - even for me!

Today, I learned about a netbook with Atom N450 (Medion Akoya E1222). It could be great, but they built it with a fan. :(

I have an Asus UL30A with Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 (TDP 10W). While the laptop does come with a fan, it's possible to run it on just passive cooling by simply changing the power profile to power saver. Measured power consumption with a Kill-A-Watt (battery removed) and I was getting 8W while browsing forums (AdBlock on, no Flash) with screen brightness at 15%.

Do you mean that the chance of the fans turning on is then 0%?

Because for some of us.. once you've gone silent, you never want to go back. :P

I recommend not buying a Dell mini 12" as it fried my harddisk two weeks ago :(
It was great till it lasted.
The most promising laptop I've seen now is the asus airo origami.
Announced to be mass-produced last year, what happened to it?

LG claims that this laptop LG x300 is fanless
http://www.lg.com/sg/it-product/noteboo ... k-X300.jsp

But I cannot be satisfied with a 11.6-inch laptop.

I hope there are more alternatives coming or already available.

Also, availability of LG X300 seems to be quite limited globally.
Asus T91 tablet is fanless, but quite unattractive otherwise.
And so are iPads and some android tablets, but they are not laptops as described in the header so we can ignore them in this thread.

Well at the moment Dell 10 inch minis are probably most easily available choice.
Currently available model (N-series atom)
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Del ... 739.0.html
Older model (Z-series atom):
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Del ... 446.0.html

Worthy upgrades would consist of 6-cell battery, 2 GB RAM and SSD.

I'd still take my old Latitude X1, though.
However for Mini 1018 you have much better SSD options than for X1 (2.5" sata vs. 1.8" IDE 50-pin), despite weaker screen & chassis.
Also GMA 3150 has better drivers for Win7 than GMA 900, while performance is equally non-existent.

It looks like the new (due February 2012) Asus EEPC X101CH netbook is fanless. See AnandTech for a roundup of the new Asus models, and Youtube for a hands-on review.

Not much of a jump from my current Dell Mini 10V, but should be slightly faster...

You do get a dual-core instead of a single-core, plus the integrated GPU.

It seems I might finally be able to replace my Samsung Q40 with something new :-), which is fanless, is not heavier and hasn't a smaller screen! This is truly a good news, as I thought that the technological progress (in the sense that interests me anyway) stopped forever in 2007.

http://netbooknavigator.com/index.php?o ... Itemid=208

If you click "Specifications", you see "Fanless design".

The only problem is that the delivery date is 11.04, and I'll be in US only till about 9.04... so probably will have to wait till it's available in UK (probably for 150% of the US price...)

My MacBook Pro has fans which you never hear unless you're doing something intensive. Even then it makes far less noise than my work Fujitsu and previous HP and Dell notebooks.

notebookcheck review of the ASUS EeePC 1011CX fanless netbook:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asu ... 216.0.html

This Cedarview netbook has long battery life, very low power consumption, and good screen brightness and contrast. There certainly are some negatives, like the non-upgradeable RAM of only 1GB.

Here is a quote of the Asus Asus Eee PC 1011CX Netbook Review

If these elements are removed, the 2.5 inch hard drive (height: 9.5 millimeters) can be changed. The RAM is permanently soldered and cannot be upgraded. Cleaning the cooling fan isn't possible with this model, while the battery can be accessed directly.

Some models in some hot countries do have the fan so there should be a warning about that.

Also, I would include an optional category where the laptop is fanless AND has an access trap to change the hard drive with a SSD one and that way you have a COMPLETELY silent laptop.

Right now, only the DELL Mini 10v and some other DELL mini laptops gather so much qualities.

Old laptops don't count. I want to run windows 7

I read that bit about not cleaning the cooling fan, and though at first I found it a bit confusing, I concluded that it was merely a poor translation of German and all they were really saying was "cleaning the cooling fan is NOT APPLICABLE to this model". I can't imagine that it would be possible to just "add" a fan to this model as there is no provision for one in the interior design and no vents in the case.

Am I wrong about that? Which countries have the fan?
