Post by yevgenievich » Sun Apr 22, 2007 2:23 am

hello everybody, i have overclocked e6600 from 2.4 to 2.6 Ghz. When i check in windows using msi utility it shows that it's at 2.6 Ghz, but when i check in cpuz it shows a multiplyer of 6 and about 1.7Ghz. what's the problem?

also when i went farther to 300Mhz bus speed i got an error in post, here are the screenshots of the error, and the configuration in bios:

you might have 'gorked' something in the bios settings - Anandtech did a review of your Motherboard or one very very similar to it and overclocked a E6600 to 3,8Ghz

Take a look at their page on overclocking and check the CPUZ image
http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2946&p=4

also, if you haven't already check if you need to update your bios

i'm going to try and see if there is update for bios like nzimmers said
thanks for the help

speedstep is disabled as well, i can make a video of going to all the options in bios or take a pcture of each option screen if that would help, and i checked the bios and it is the latest version.

maybe CPU-Z is just reporting it wrong, try PC WIZARD and Everest.

according to pc wizard i should see molten e6600 and a lot of smoke at 255*C lol, but the temperature for each core seems to be accurate, and then same thing as cpuz, 1.7Ghz.I'm going to mess in bios a little more and boot back into 32 bit windows and check pc wizard there. I would've checked in win98 and vista, but win98 crashed for good and i took vistas head off for bluescreening every five minutes.

EDIT:
ok adding everest info, i took two screenshots of that one with 5 second delay, you can see the difference in multiplier. now i will be going in 32 bit xp and see if there is a difference

multiplier still jumps in everest, but atleast it shows the desired clock speed

Are you are looking at CPU-Z while the cpu is "idling"?

300*6 = 1800
300*9 = 2700.

Just run something in the background (a game, prime95,...) that uses up cpu cycles and then look at CPU-Z.

i was starting to think that maybe that's what it is, i ran two instances of prime95 at same time to get full 100% load and it shows multiplier of 9, but weird is that everest showing multiplier of 7 and 429 bus speed(right now the processor is at 3.0Ghz)
i didn't think that it would show lower multiplier because EIST was disabled.
but there is still the other problem with the 267Mhz error that comes up on POST, i still need help with that one. this error comes up only when bus speed is over or equals 300 Mhz, i ran 299x9 and no error

First, regarding the varying multiplier and speed- did you find and disable C1E State in the 'Advanced BIOS Features > CPU Feature' page?

On the Platinum that page contains: "Execute Disable Bit" and "Set Limit CPUID MaxVal to 3" selections. In the early BIOS versions, the 'C1E' selection is hidden, requiring the user to press "F4" while in the CPU Feature page to unhide the selection. C1E is another idleing process and is also linked to EIST. (I just read an Intel document that says one of those two is always enabled, however they both allow the 'Disabled' selection in our BIOSes)

Also, set Windows 'Power' menu to 'Always On'.

As for the message on boot, I'm not sure, but I believe this is present at all times unless you boot at 333MHz FSB as this is a 1333MHz FSB (QDR) mobo.
Seems everyone with the MSI P6N boards comment on it.

Hope some of that helps.
