Intel 3200 Server chipset TDP?

Post by valnar » Sun Nov 29, 2009 1:07 pm

I'm trying to find the TDP for the 3200 chipset but I don't know what desktop chipset it is equivalent to. I want to build a low powered server. It's between these boards, probably with an equivalent Celeron 440 CPU.

Older, with 945GC chipset

Newer, with "3200" chipset

This is for a home firewall. Both can be used in 1U Server chassis. The 945GC chipset is older, but it still has a 22.2 watt TDP.

Here's Intel's page on the 3210, which I believe is practically the same as the 3200. The power consumption numbers should be roughly the same.

I have some notes on this I gathered a while ago, which say: 3200 Max TDP = 20.0 W, 3210 Max TDP = 21.3 W. Both have an idle TDP of 11.3 W.

I believe the 3200-series chipsets are based off of the X38 enthusiast chipset.

These chipsets are power hogs. However, as far as I can tell, they are Intel's lowest power chipset that supports ECC. So if Intel and ECC are requirements for your build, go with this chipset (or an i5 or i7 Xeon). IIRC, Intel's least-power, non-ECC chipset is the Q35. Even lower power are the notebook chipsets, such as 945GSE.
