How to take pushpin NB heatsinks out w/o removing the mobo?

Hey guys,

It would save considerable time, but I can't really see a way to get the small NB heatsink off without removal of the mainboard. Its not THAT big a problem, but if there is a way, I'd like to know how!

You can't, simple as that. The pins have to be pushed in and the only way this can be done is by access to the back of the board.

You probably could destroy the pins somehow, and then glue the heatsink on.

better be careful getting rough with removal of those pins, too much upward force without help from the other side could just take a little chunk of PCB out of the hole (or crack it)... with perhaps a trace with it.

If they are plastic pins, you can probably cut them off, push the pin remnants away, and mount using new plastic pins.

But, seriously, you're not doing yourself a favor by trying to save time here. Take your time, do it right, don't screw up your system.

I was thinking of cutting through the push pins, or crushing the ends with one of those vaguely scissor like tools.

You could probably get in there and just snip off as much of the protruding top portion of the pushpin as possible. Snip twice for each pin: first to get the "head" off so the spring will come away (if it has a spring), and again to cut away as much of the exposed pin as your clippers will reach. Then the remaining nub can be pushed out the back.
