Low Power Desktop System Options...

Post by mattyzx3 » Mon Aug 08, 2005 5:34 pm

Turion ML-40 $361.65 (page computer)
DFI NF3 Lan Party $94

Total $455

Pentium M 760 $302.00
Aopen i915GMm-HFS $256.52

Total 558.52

Which of these combos would give me better performance?

Is there another option I haven't considered?

Overall, I'd think performance would be very similar. However, because of the Dothan core, mobile chipset, and DDR2, the Pentium-M setup would probably use less power (and, of course, this would make it easier to cool).

Just out of curiosity, what do you plan to do with this computer?

Depending on how low you want to go, you should consider a Venice AMD64. Power consumption only 30-40 watts (http://www.lostcircuits.com/cpu/amd_venice/) which isn't very hard to cool quietly... I have a 3200+ with an CPNS7000AlCu at 5v or less and the CPU is about 35C under load.

No performance sacrifice if you go this route.... you could also undervolt it and you'd save some more watts then.

Much cheaper when paired with an undervolting S939 board than using a mobile solution.

Of course, if you do need to go very low power, then I'd go one of the options you listed (PentiumM has more advanced power management I think, but remember it's similar to the A64 in that regard).
