Q9550 vs Q9550S

Post by sonic6k » Thu Oct 01, 2009 1:03 am

Hi,

I can get any of these for the *SAME* price. The difference between them is only that the S version is factory undervolted. This gives it the advantage of putting out less heat, though won't overclock as far as the vanilla version. I am not the overclocking guy, just want a nice cool 'n quiet (pun not intended) PC. So which to buy?

If it's the same price, get the S. Then undervolt it more. :)

http://www.silentpcreview.com/intel-q9550s <- suggests the vanilla is able to undervolt more than the S version resulting in the vanilla being more "green". I am very familiar with undervolting and such, so for me it's kind of clear which to choose although now I found another issue to think about. My Nexus 430W maybe isn't powerful enough to drive this system efficiently (so that load isn't always peaking high). Which Core 2 Duo is a good buy right now or is quad the way to go?

If there's any difference aside from the factory voltage settings, it would be that the S version is binned more selectively to tolerate lower voltages, making it a higher-quality part overall.

I'd love to get my hands on a q9550s for the same price as a q9550.
Where can you find one for that kind of price?[/quote]
