Mini-ITX DRAM Ranking List

Is it just me? I always wondered why we have to tolerate ITX boards being underpowered than the latest notebooks in term of maximum memory? Not to mention those boards lag behind corresponding mobile/desktop boards by 1 year or more. This ranking list helps us to keep track of things and dream about one day we'll finally see an itx board matches the finest and baddest notebook (3-4 SO-DIMM slots anyone?).

Apparently Samsung is getting close to 8GB SODIMM DDR3 modules. A detailed data sheet for Model# M471B1G73AH0 is on their website:

Didn't you get the memo that "mini-ITX is the new micro-ATX"? ^ ~

I would say, the same kind of applications that people use with their 16GB notebooks, iMacs and even the bigger desktops.

I can't say for everyone else, for me it's mainly virtualization. Ever heard of VMware, NComputing and so on?

Notebooks with 4 sodimm slots have been around for two years now, and Apple has also updated their iMac to 4 sodimm slots since last year. I can tell you that many people want to move to sff but 2 memory slots just don't cut it. By compiling this ranking I would hope that the manufacturers would eventually wake up to the demand and bring some fresh air to the enthusiast sff crowd.

Yeah I know about virtualization. What are you virtualizing though? 16GB is an assload of RAM even if it's shared between a virtual machine and a real one.

I was thinking that it might be useful for video editing, multitrack audio editing, or maybe you were going to build a SAN with a massive disk cache or something.

Who said you only need one virtual machines? You might want to browse in a Windows VM, write code in a Linux VM, use another Linux disto VM for testing, while keeping a file server VM, a webserver VM and a HTPC VM or whatever you can come up with ^ ~

Plus your family might want to share your machine with their own VMs, no?

Not really exotic I am sure plenty of people are already doing that.

If you read about Ncomputing, this probably can be done already. The VM part is sort of like your 'head end', but it does need to do some transcoding work.
I don't mind having good SSD's either, both SSD and RAM help with virtualization.

However since people like to bring this question up over and over again, I would like to point out that you do not have to need maximum amount of memory in order to benefit from this. Having more memory slots helps you lower your overall memory cost. Say you may only need 8GB ram right now, but having 4 sodimm slots allow you to buy 4x 2GB instead of being force to buy 2x 4GB to achieve your memory requirement (when 4GB modules are still expensive). Same situation will be when 8GB modules are released and very expensive.

I hope that's enough answers for the 'why do you need such and such RAM' questions. If still not satisfied please refer to this:

If anyone has tried with using 2x 4GB modules on some of the older itx boards (such as some GM45 & GME965 boards) you are very welcome to share your experience here.

Dell M6500 4x8GB Configuration Available

Apparently Dell started to sell 8GB modules on the M6500 notebook since July. The max configuration is 4x8GB = 32GB. Although when I checked today on Dell website that cost > $9k (over $2k per 8GB module) for the memory alone. This is likely the SODIMM DDR3 type. It's not clear whether this part is supplied by Samsung or not. Samsung's website still list 8GB Sodimm DDR3 as 'customer sample', and I couldn't find any retail availability.

4 SODIMM slots is not becoming the norm for notebooks.
Nor will it, because:
1. the need for memory is not rising faster than Moore's law
2. notebooks are not getting bigger

It's confirmed that the $2300 8GB DDR3 SODIMM shipping with Dell M6500 since July is indeed the Samsung RAM. And Samsung is mass producing them now.

Yeah sure. Have you ever gone out to buy the approved memory on any of the ITX QVL lists? How on earth do these motherboard manufacturers select vendors and memory for their QVL lists?

At least in the US the most frequent result of a google shopping search is: you can't get there from here. And if you can, it is from some out of the way shop on the wayward side of Kodo island that has no phone number.

I would love to have a mini-ITX cube as my next main system and would like to do much of the same things (multiple VM's, light gaming) but it looks like the memory limitations will force me to go uATX.

Is it a size thing? ITX boards simply too small for more than 2 slots?
