Just built myself a system for file storage/torrents:

Gigabyte D510UD
RAM 2GB
HDD 2x1TB WD10EADS
PSU Antec TruePower 360W

The system idles at 45W measured at the wall, under Prime 95 it goes up to 50W, I am shocked, I expected about 30W. Antec PSU may not be the most efficient but my old PIII 933 box was idling at about 40W with the same PSU.
Why is D510UD so power hungry? It even has an additional 4-pin 12V power connector. Is it really needed on what is supposed to be a low consumption board? And it does not start without this 4-pin power connector. I am at lost.

Set those HDD's to go off at 3-min and check again. I'm not familiar with the Truepower. A quick check, short the green to black with the PSU completely disconnected from all devices and measure the power to run itself. The Dell RM112 does 4W, a cheap 200W can use 9W, I've seen as high as 14W.

I have a 380W Earthwatts and my i3-530 idled at 34W. I then added a second HDD 1.5GB EARS and a Dell RM112 PSU and got down to 28W idle, also on a Gigabyte MB.

The Atom 510 should do a lot better. Long-short, PSU's make a huge difference.

Replaced old Antec SmartPower-350 with EarthWatts-380D, power consumption went down to 40W. Well, I will live with that.
