TechPowerUp Review ASUS GTX 780 DirectCU II OC 3 GB
I had really high hopes for the noise levels of the new DC II cooler and am, to be honest, a bit disappointed.

Noise levels in idle are slightly higher than the reference design--it would have been easy to at least match the NVIDIA board here because temperatures are comfortably cool.

During gaming, the card matches the noise levels of the reference GTX 780 exactly, which isn't bad. I just wish ASUS would have reaped the benefits of the improved cooler instead of focusing on lower temperatures.
. Maybe it can be tweaked with their utility, but if they find it noisy... then it will be really bad for me.

I'm thinking on waiting for MSI Lightning or going with the Stock EVGA GTX780 + EVGA Backplate + Prolimatech MK-26.

Who are you quoting and where are the db measurements?

Quote comes from the review, on page 25 Fan Noise. you can also find the db measurements there, but i wouldn't trust it to much in terms of numbers, i doubt they do it like SPCR with the chamber etc.

Another review of the DCUII

Guru3d ASUS GeForce GTX 780 DirectCU II OC review
Cooling & Noise Levels

The NVIDIA reference coolers are great, but they follow the temperature target of 80 degrees C. With the DirectCU II, CoolTech Fan technology the GPU will get 425W of cooling power thrown at it. As a result the temperature target might remain 80 degrees C, but we have never seen the card pass 66 Degrees. An added benefit of that is that the dynamic clock frequency will go higher up to the point it reached its power target. So this is why the card is so close and sometimes a small notch faster then the GTX Titan. Noise wise I (and I am truly nitpicking here) I expected total silence. Fact remains that you can hear a bit of airflow when the GPU is under stress. Now it's close to nothing, but after reading all the marketing gobble on CoolTech Fan technology I expected the cooler perform bar nothing or at least get Parrot AR drone functionality :) But it remains a cooling solution that can be compared to the competition in terms of performance. Overall though, the cooling solution is really good, no mistake there.

Thanks for posting this. I'm ready to buy TODAY but the EVGA and this one remain elusive.

NP, im still searching for myself, if i find more info ill continue posting it. Hope you can get a hold on the EVGA ACX has decent comments, maybe SPCR could review one in the future.

Personally im a little disappointing into Asus DCUII, but i can see why they did it, with the GTX780 boost 2.0 based on temp... a lower temp running videocard will perform better. But i was just looking for the same quietness of the GTX680/670 series with a little better performance, im still unsure what to do atm. I would love to see SPCR get a hold of one of those, since they have reviewed multiple Asus DirectCUII cards in the past year.

I'm kinda wanting to wait how the MSI GTX780 Lightning, it was shown on a shadowed boxed on Computex but not displayed, so idk if its still very far away from release. In my experience the twin frozr IV is quiet on idle and mid load still quiet, but at high loads becomes really loud, to drive it to that point only furmark can, normal gaming still is very quiet in my limited experience with GTX660TI. MSI is suppose to release the twin frozr V with the GTX780 lightning.... but unsure if its going to be quiet or more like asus aimed into better cooling for the boots 2.0.

I'm also thinking with such a good reviews on the Asus DirectCUII on GTX680/670, specially from SPCR, that i should accept lower performance and save some $$$, and just go for the ASUS GTX770-DC2OC-2GD5 GeForce GTX 770 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card, its practically the same card and same cooler as the ones reviewed on SPCR, just a little higher clocks, so it should be good in theory, just 20% slower than GTX780, still i don't think a single GTX780 will drive a 4k monitor, not sure if 2 will, so i might just wait for nvidia maxwell next year for planning a 4k setup, and just call it with sure bet on quietness on the Asus GTX770 DirectCUII.

I ended up just getting the EVGA acx 780 because it was in stock and had free shipping and no tax at one company that turned out to be less than if I had bought it from my regular suppliers who didn't have it in stock although their price before tax and shipping was less.

Noise wise it is fine - it isn't completely silent but neither was the card I'm replacing. Graphics are MUCH better than my 580 was. Still not quite enough to play Crysis 3 with fxaa and everything else maxed out at 1920 x 1280 (some parts it is fine but other parts it is still a bit laggy although my 580 couldn't even come close to this for performance).

Conclusion - I'll still need a second card for SLI and a new motherboard to take advantage of it. I just don't have enough space/ slots with my current motherboard for my sound card and pcie-8 SAS raid card. While you can put two cards right up against each other for SLI, I've come to the conclusion if you can have the distance of a slot free between them cooling is much better.

I ended up initially getting an EVGA ACZ SC 780 gtx (only because I got tired of waiting for the DirectCU 780. The card is much faster than my 580gtx directcu although there isn't much difference in noise level.

It is wonderful for Crysis 2 and Crysis1 cranked up but it times in Crysis3 it is a bit sluggish although I admit I CRANK the settings on everything at 1920x1280 and with everything set very high with fxaa as well. Hopefully by the end of the year I'll be able to get an extended motherboard and add in a second 780gtx. I need more space as I have an 8x LSI controller and a 1x sound card.

Glad you got you evga acx.

I gave up on the direcuii 780, seem like asus is more oriented into temps than noise. I think msi ATM has better stock fan profiles, and while I could still tweak them via 3rd party programs, idk how will it end up.

At the end I decide to stick with my tj08e that closed the chance of the prolimatech mk26, I had a very good experience with my galaxy gtx 580 that included the artic cooling accelero III, so why not repeat it, so I bought evga titan backplate, bought a galaxy gtx 780 (waited for evga but never went in stock), and bought an artic cooling accelero III, that combo should fit fine on my tj08e + hr02.

I don't think this iterations of gpus in sli will be enough to drive a 4k monitor, so will wait for nvidia broadwell and intel skylake to rebuild complete on ATX with sli. By then I think we will see new cases, maybe fractal design define r5, and expecting thermal right hr 22 and noctua nh-d15, maybe scythe comes back to the us with new iteration of their fans, really wanting to see gentle typhoon pwm.

Just in case the ACX doesnt cut it, or you are looking for an alternative, consider MSI N780 TF 3GD5/OC Graphics Cards N780 TF 3GD5/OC, it just got reviewed by GURU3D MSI GeForce GTX 780 Gaming review, got the Top Pick Award, and got really good comments into noise/temp.
Cooling & Noise Levels

The NVIDIA reference coolers are doing their job well, but they follow the temperature target of 80 degrees C. With the TwinFrozr cooling technology the GPU will get 450W of cooling power thrown at it. As a result the temperature target might remain 80 degrees C, but we have never seen the card pass 60 Degrees. Now if the temperature is that low there is an extra benefit... the power and temp limiters do not kick in, allowing the product to boost a little higher then usual. So this is why the card is so close towards the GeForce GTX Titan. Noise wise I am very happy as well. In its default configuration you can not hear airflow when the GPU is under stress installed in a PC. It really is that silent, very impressive.
For $20 more imo is the best GTX780, i went with galaxy + acelero III that imo might end up very good as it will be similar to what i have, but thats also $80 more and it needs 3 slots, and the chance of messing it up. Seems MSI has done really well in all their Gaming/Lightning grade cards, there are good comments on the GTX760 and GTX770, and now the GTX780. I really hope at some point SPCR gets some MSI cards to see if they really live to what other sites are posting.

Is now that card much noisier than MSI GTX 780 Gaming?

How is it compared to MK-26 GTX 780 cooled (your guess)?
