problems using open technology. I can attest to using a computer for
longer because of Linux. I just retired my 11 year-old machine, built
around a 200MHz Pentium I. The computer had been the main one for
the family, and was running IceWM on Mandrake 9.0. IceWM is just
one of several window managers which run nicely on lesser
powered machines. Many of its parts will be reused, and those that
aren't will be recycled through http://freegeek.org (a past
Dot Org of the Week).

The "Linux-Ecology-HOWTO" at the first link has lots of pointers for those interested in green computing using Linux, while the second link points to Portland, OR organization with the motto "Helping the needy get nerdy since the beginning of the 3rd millennium." Gotta love 'em...
My two "Frankenstein" home machines are built from retired "obsolete" parts and happily run Linux faster than most new machines run Vista.
