My friend has a vacation house which is 1 house away from the community center. The center has free open wifi signal. He can get a weak signal from 1 spot in the house. What can he use to strenghten the wifi signal reception on his laptop?

Maybe something like Diamond Multimedia 300Mbps 802.11n Wireless Repeater and Range Extender (WR300N) could work, although im not sure really going to depend on other things.

I currently use a D-Link DAP-1160 to extend the wi-fi range between adjacent buildings: you may use something similar placed at that only spot which you talk about in your OP.

Please take note also that the actual throughput will still be limited by the bandwidth available at that spot quoted above (regardless of the strenghtened signal seen by the laptop nic, and of the expanded coverage).
