I have currently a SansDigital DAS (8 bay) with a SATA RAID card in a PC.
I have been playing around trying to make it more silent. However, I would like to upgrade to something that is near silent out of the box, reliable, and simple.
Where should I start looking?

Synology NAS devices are well supported and easy to use. I have the DS212j at home, and under most use scenarios, it's very quiet. The fan is a standard 92mm fan, so even if it is too loud for your tastes you can replace it with something quieter.
