Donate: 120 & 140mm fan round-up

Post by Bakkone » Sun Mar 20, 2011 6:02 am

Hi Mike!

Sent you some money. Hopefully we can see some new fans in the future.

One thing I would really want answered is if its better to use a 140mm fan, instead of a 120mm one. People say it has been proven that using a 140mm fan is of no use. I just don't trust anyone but you for this type of information.

Thanks for a great site!

Donated another 15$ for a 140mm fan round-up. I have long itched to read such a comparison on SPCR : )

Hopefully Mike will post an answer. I would like to hear his thoughts on this matter.

Here is my much less authoritative thoughts on that question. I share that question with you. I have come up with only two plausible reasons.

1. There is just less competition in the 140mm space and with fewer competitors it has just worked out the 120mm market has produced some better winners (more entrants in the race)

2. The other reason is maybe give the viscosity of air, the scale of the motors, etc... that 120mm is just a sweet spot. (yes this is weak... but I am grasping at straws)

Anyways, neither of those may be the answer Mike comes up with. But I have been thinking about it. It is the best I have been able to come up with.

For the 140mm fans, I nominate the following models:

Zaward's ZG2-140B
http://www.zaward.com/zaward-branding-products/zg2-140b

Be Quiet!'s Shadow Wings SW1 140mm 1000rpm
http://www.bequiet.com/en/casefans/264

Akasa's Apache Black
http://www.akasa.co.uk/update.php?tpl=p ... l=AK-FN062

All three are PWM models with 140mm mounting holes and I want to see how their unique blade designs compare.

How much would it cost to have one fan in the round-up? I don't remember where I can find that piece of information.
