ALL HAIL THE GTX 750 TI / $150 (CAD)

Since this GPU is something of a milestone and a future benchmark in efficiency, I thought I'd try and rally up funds for a review. To quote Mike:

probably need different targets for fanned vs fanless -- the latter is always more complex to test. say... $150 & $200.
So target donation is 150 CAD for now. I can put in a seed of $30.

WHO'S WITH ME?
(or at least interested enough in getting the card in for review to pay part of the cost)

Tally so far is $65 out of $150 needed
  • Das_Saunamies: $30
  • quest_for_silence: $15
  • Abula: $20
I'm thinking we should probably aim to get an MSI 750 Ti Gaming 2 GB, as they seem to be readily available, affordable, user-controllable, and quiet - all boxes ticked for SPCR interest. You can suggest alternative cards if they are more attractive.

Edit: added pledges for quest_for_silence, Abula.

Well, I think I may add my coins (but I'd like MikeC voiding the warranty slapping an Accelero on that MSI Gaming): are 15 CAD enough? Let me know.

$15 is quite alright. At 30 we just need 5 donors, at 15 it's only 10 etc. We've got a community of hundreds with massive traffic going through SPCR, so this is just a matter of people willing to fight the good fight (i.e. open up their wallets and contribute more than their opinion).

If we want extras like cooler swaps I'm sure the testing will cost extra. Mike did say fanless would be $200 to test, but we'll see.

Nice! PayPal has worked well in the past, that's how I got the fancy text under my name anyway.

OK, I see your interest, gents. Unfortunately, my few contacts at MSI have disappeared so a sample might be tough. We'll see. Maybe buy one (and resell) if we can't get a sample in a reasonable time frame.

Sounds good! In "the 750 Ti thread" we've had a couple mini-reviews on other-than-MSI cards with initial results not as promising.

Word came from a new MSI contact that they don't have review samples of this card any more, and no more are coming. I supposed we could go out and buy one -- but perhaps someone in Vancouver (or nearby) wants one and will let us test it before he takes possession?

What a shame. Hopefully a card donor will show up, as the $$$ donor list is falling short.

I would happily buy one and have it shipped to SPCR for testing, with the understanding I could pay for shipping it on to me after the testing, and I'm OK with the likelyhood that it would be weeks/months before it was completed.

I have an EVGA 750ti FTW and the noise level at the minimum fan speed drivers will permit (42%) is not tolerable - drowns out 6 hard drives, 3 120mm fans running at 12v, and the power supply & CPU fans...

Quick'n'dirty solution: put a Noctua LNA cable between the fan and the header (or a suitable inline resistor, if you prefer some soldering).

That'd be cool! It definitely would not be months. Would could probably ship it to you perhaps 2 weeks after receiving it here. We'd put the review on a priority rush knowing a generous contributor is awaiting. 8)

Mike - I'll order the MSI 'Gaming' 750ti and see if I can get it shipped directly to you. Is the address in the sticky in this forum correct? {Silent PC Review; 361-6417 Fraser St; Vancouver, BC V5W3A6; Canada}

^^ quest_for_silence - thanks, good suggestion - I have a couple Zalman Fan Mates I could use. I've got a Arctic Accelero S1 passive sink I could pull off my old 8800GT if I'm looking for a somewhat bigger project.

MikeC, is there any efficient way to loan you parts for testing if we live in another country? I imagine only a minority of us live within Canada, and dealing with Customs in both directions would be a pain.

About 11-12% of SPCR traffic is Canadian, last time I looked. Around 35% US, maybe 40% EU.

Ordering something from a Canadian retailer like NCIX or Newegg.ca to be delivered to us would work in 99% of cases. Some stores don't allow shipping to a different address. You'd have to find one that does.

Big CA retailers:

NCIX.com
Newegg.ca
Memory Express (CA)

Not sure who else.

If you have it in your hands already, shipping it via postal service is by far the best way, and to mark the value as $10. You still want to insure it tho. But no point sending it if it is not a "standard sample" representative of all other items of the saml model name/number.
