Another Thorens Reborn: TD160

The Thorens TD160 is a poor man's Linn, and still amazingly popular as the vinyl revival continues. This is the story of a 160 reborn, with many components "borrowed" from the Linn.

Oh. I didn't notice there was an audiophile section in SPCR.

Nice instructable, though.

FYI, this TT & tonearm combo is up for sale -- US$1,000. Considering the Linn Akito tonearm typically sells for US$500, this is obviously a pretty good deal.

Mike, is the motor suspended on the same sub-plinth as the platter?

Would plugging it into a UPS stabilize the AC powering the motor?

No. Pls read the section on the first page under THORENS TD160 BASICS -- and the drawing there. In all of these two-part chassis TT designs, the motor is by itself, isolated from the rest by the springs & the belt.

Maybe, depending on how bad or dirty your AC lin is, but it can also be detrimental, depending on the UPS. A much better option would be the Music Hall Cruise Control 2, which gives Quartz locked 33.3 and 45 rpm electronic speed/switching, as well as fine speed adjustment.

For SPCR members buying directly from me, I'll include the Linn Basik / Audio Technica AT95 cartridge that's on it -- probably less than 20 hrs use on the elliptical stylus. A $50~60 value.
