Is there any person here who owns a PSU with 14cm fan?

such as coolmax and nmediapc models, are 14cm fans.

could it be the only cooling fan for the pc?

seasonics are really expensive and a mere 12cm

how are the accoustics?

It could, but a psu able to act as the only exhaust need to spin fast and be loud, or you need to run a really cool system which does not consume a lot of power. In most cases it will be both cooler and more quiet to use an exhaust fan also.

It's not the size that matters, it's how you use it  You can build a quiet PSU with any fan size, it's more about the quality of the fan and the fan controller. And the PSU has to be efficient so it produces as little heat as possible.

So it's mostly irrelevant if the fan is 14cm or 12cm, and since i have not seen any 14cm PSUs from quality brands i doubt they are anywhere near as quiet as a Seasonic for example.

Of what? The Seasonics? Very good, possible the best around, short of passive PSUs. It's likely you wont be able to hear the PSU over you HDD.

380 or 430W Antec NeoHE or Seasonic S12 are the most quiet resonably priced PSUs, and are more than powerful enough for almost any system. I run an opteron dual core at FX speeds and a 7900GTO/GTX off a 300W passive PSU, and it works perfectly fine.

I agree that Seasonic at $100 is the best brand, it had better be, but if newegg cells a 14cm PSu for $35 from generica but the fan is as quiet as Seasonic and it works i see no reason to go with seasonic.

OK, when you find one be sure to let us know about it.

cheapest Seasonic (330W) is $55 at Newegg right now, most PCs use less than 330W.

If you want to experiment then get the PSU with a 14cm fan and tell us how well it works.

I stopped doing that a long time ago because i noticed that it is a lot easier just to get something that is proven to work well and be quiet.

My Ultra X-Pro 600W has a 135mm fan. I can't vouch for the noise level as I can't even hear it three feet away over the sound of the rest of my computer, but the PSU has been reviewed here at SPCR recently.

Pros: This is a GREAT psu for someone who looking for silent and reliable system. The 140mm fan is dead silent and provide excellent air flow.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: It looks and sounds a quality psu. May be I am more lucky than Jay. I will recommend.

COOLMAX CR-450B ATX 450W "140mm Fan" Power Supply $42.99

Pros: Very slick design (i.e. black, fan on the bottom, low/high/auto knob)... Plenty of connectors. No issue reaching all over the place in the Lian Li 7B chasis. Worked great with an Intel 965WH mobo and Core 2 Duo and NVidia 6800 GT.

Cons: Nothing really. Hope this lasts (since some of the other reports suggest that it has a tendency to die early).

Other Thoughts: Fan is quiet, not silent. On the low setting it's mostly quiet... CPU goes up a degree on idle. Not a major issue.

So have you actually tried either of those PSU's?

This nMEDIAPC seems a honest PSU to me but i can't really tell since i never owned one. The 14cm fan must help in the silent aspect too. I do own a 14cm, 1000RPM case fan and I would say that makes the same noise as a 1000 RPM 12x12cm fan but with +10cfm. So it must be easier make a quite PSU with a 14cm fan
As for low budget PSUs, 3 moths ago I bought two coolermaster extreme power 430 W ( I had already owned a 380W model of the same brand) and I can say that they are fairly quite. I think that the 12cm fan doesn't go higher than 1000RPM which is quite enough for me.
So yes expansive PSU does have a lot more features and quality but you can find something quite even among low-bugdet PSUs as long as you don't have a power hungry pc.

As for Coolmax...

Neither is that NMedia very convincing, combined 12V output isn't mentinoed and it doesn't have active PFC.

My friend has owned the NMedia PSU before. Bloody as hell as loud, not even close to quiet at startup.

I remember talking to one of the admins on the NCIX forum who asked MikeC to test an NMedia PSU [the 400W one, I believe] and MikeC simply said that it starts out too loud at greater than 30dba@1m. No point in trying anymore? :)
