I need 3 to equal 4

Post by Ross1 » Thu May 15, 2008 7:40 am

Okay, so I have a seasonic S12 500W power supply, and a antec P182.

now, the power supply has 3 sata connectors on each cable. The bottom HDD cage can hold 4 hard drives (i currently have 3 in there).

So if I were to put another hard drive in there, then I would either need to use the other sata cable (its already cramped down there, that middle fan often gets hit by cables already, and it seems a waste to need another cable for one extra hard drive in the same cage).

I dont really want to use the top HDD cage, firstly because i already took it out and stuck an intake fan there to improve airflow, and secondly i have a large graphics card where the PCI-e x6 connector at the end pretty much touches the hard drive).

one other option would be to buy a new power supply with 4 sata connectors on the same cable, but that seems an incredibly expensive waste of money when i already have a very good quiet PSU.

question is, can you guys think of a better solution to my predicament? i just thought a really long molex to sata adapter might work, but i will need to check to see if i have any molex connectors free.

What about this?

Seems to fit what you're looking for and you might get a little more clearance from the right angle connectors.

that would hopefully work, would just need to find somewhere in the UK that sells one.

Options are limited in the UK, it appears. Your only other option is the standard molex to SATA splitter option.

If you're up for a bit of simple modding, you could get hold of an extra connector and add it to the original cable.

Here's a guide: http://www.gam.net.au/pcmods/satapower/1.html

You can either steal a 90º connector off another supply, or buy one. Trouble is the only source I know of for theser in the UK is kustompcs (http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_1950.html) but they're out of stock and have been for a while.
