Silencing a 2U or 3U PSU

Post by irstudio » Tue Mar 16, 2004 3:39 pm

Hi,

I am building a videoconferencing unit so it needs to be quiet.
The case is a 3U and the powersupply is about 50-60 dBa loud

I am looking to see if there are any quiet PSU units out there that might work.

So far,
Seasonic SS-350FK
Fortron FSP300-602U

I don't have any noise data on them though!!

I am pretty sure a regular powersupply won't fit

I've got a Dell server w/ 3 1U PSU's in it -- with those tiny little fans, I'm not sure how quiet they will ever be... :(

That's interesting - Glenn is offering my single fan mod, and the external cable idea is clever. I have an A-Tech case and this power supply, and was not satisfied with the noise level. I first tried several 60mm fans, but was not satisfied with any of them, and ended up just removing the 60mm fan altogether and replacing the 80mm fan with a Real Silent Case Fan, flipped around to draw air IN to the psu. This technique works IN THIS CASE, because of the way the air flows through the case. This 400psu is loafing, pushing no more than 100w to a P4 2.66B and a single hard drive, so even with the reduced airflow, it runs relatively cool.

This is an Enermax power supply, IIRC.

Wow, you have an ATech? Would you trade that in for a 4000 EX or another desktop case if you could do it over again?

Where did you put your HDD? Will the case support a small LCD monitor?

I have my ATX PS\2 form factor PSU in a 4U, and the ducting options provided is enough to actually eliminate the need of a PSU fan
because directly upstream there is a 120mm to force feed it
but then its not exhausting the mobo compartment either
and there is a considerable temperature differential (force fed AC)

does that 3U have the typical mid-case fan lineup?
