I've been thinking about the SPCR review of the Phantom 500W PSU, and it mentioned that the US version they tested didn't have PFC (and had efficiencies of up to 90%) while the EU/AUS version would have PFC and would be arround 4% less efficient. Does anyone know if the loss of efficiency on the PFC version would result in the fan kicking in earlier (based on my unproved assumption that less efficiency would equal more heat at lower power usages), or does the loss of efficiency not translate into more heat (or minimal heat).
Can people with the AUS/EU (PFC) version of the Antec Phantom 500W comment under what usage patterns/systems does the PSU's fan start to turn on?
I'm considering changing my Antec Neopower to an Antec Phantom 500, with the goal of having my system be without a PSU fan while idle, and while doing low level computing like using the internet, Word, etc. My system (AMD 64 3500+, 1GB RAM, 2 SATA HDD, X800XL /w A/C ATI5R2, NF4U M/B, 4 120mm fans, DVDRW, CDRW)
