Papst click

Post by dCrypt » Thu Jan 23, 2003 2:58 pm

Sometime ago I read the article in SPCR about Enermax fan replacing and sounded too familiar for me. I proceeded to replace the GlobeFan by a Papst, because (all of you know yet) it's sooooo hard to find Panaflos here in Spain.

So I came here, to the forums, and read that Papst fans has an annoying 'click'. Well, my system now has a noticeable 'click' which sounds about every half hour. I thought it was the hdd (danger! hdd clicking!) but now I know about fan clicking, I am not sure.

Any one in the forums could explain which kind of 'click' is meant to be? Could you describe the audible signal of such a 'click'? Is it a single click after a long period of time? A continuous clicking?

Thank you very much.

I happen to have a lot of PAPST fans and I have *never* heard a single click.

If you listen at a distance, it sounds like a bit like buzz -- bzzzzzz. As you get closer, especially at reduced voltage, you can make out the tic-tic-tic-tic-tic-tic-tic-tic... It is continuous. Lots of people have heard it. I don;t know whether it goes away after use; I am not interested in listening to it for however many weeks it takes. I wish I could hear one that doesn't make this noise!

It's not every half hour, whatever that is.

Oh, thanks. Now I understand. I'd better take care of my hdd. I don't like this 'click' in my system at all.

The click is also something not showing up on either dBa measurements or spectrum analysises. I have a Global Win cooler, CBK-II58, slightly undervolted, which is measured at 25 dB, on my 1700+. I also use the 12 db rated Papst 80mm fan on my other machine, a k6-2 500. And I find the Papst tic-tic-tic-tic very annoying, compared with the lush woooosh on my Global Win one. So there you go.

But it is! :o

Maybe it's different from Papst to Papst, maybe I've been unlucky then.

I don't have a Pabst, but I've heard clicking like that from sleeve bearing fans, and since the noise always disappeared when I positioned the fan horizontally, I think the shaft is bouncing back and forth. I've usually been able to eliminate the clicking by changing the plastic washers or adding an extra one to one end.

It ist Papst. Dr. Pabst is the founder of tomshardware.

Indeed there is: Papst is a german fan manufacturer, while Papst is low-cost/low-quality american beer. The favored drink of frat boys everywhere.

if you only get a clicking noise every hour or so then maybe it's an internal ADSL modem, or some other kind of network device re-establishing a conection?
