PSUs with no coil whine

Post by shunx » Sun Feb 23, 2003 2:30 pm

Can anyone name some quiet PSUs that have no discernable whine or buzz from non-fan components? My Enermax whines.

Now that I think about it, the only quiet PSU available to me seems to be the Zalman -- fellow Vancouverites or Canadians please inform if you know of others being available.

Is there any Zalman ZM300A-APF owners here who can provide feedback regarding coil whine? Thanks.

ive read that people have had trouble with the zalman psu whining with a radeon 9700pro. it seems the exra power connector the radeon has can cause the whine. ill dig out the link to the post if you are interested, or no one confirms this first hand.

shunx,

My ZM300A-APF has no whine whatsoever. I use an Nvidia not an ATI video card, however.

The mild buzz from my monitor can be heard over anything coming from my case.

That's good to know. The review sample from this site had some coil whine, along with some comments so far. So right now I'm iffy on the Zalman.

Coil whine and buzz

Post by rjm » Fri Mar 21, 2003 12:49 pm

Good to know it isn't just me. I'm running a Seasonic 250W connected to the EPIA 5000 and Barracuda IV. The power draw is minimal so I can get away with it fanless since everything is in an open frame system. Plenty of airflow.

But, yes, the biggest.. or at least most annoying.. noise is the coil buzz from the main transformer in the power supply. It is just bad construction: if you press on the transformer with the plastic head of a screwdriver (NOT your fingers, please!), the noise changes and gets softer.

I think with a switching power supply you'll always get some audible noise, which will vary with all sorts of strange factors. But it ought to be better than this. :?

Like rjm I've taken the fan out of my PSU. It is a Jou Jye 350W with Active PFC, and it starts making electronic noise as soon as you switch on the mains power (and the 5V SB is active) - forget windows loading or ATI cards or drivers :(
