antec true power vs 'new' fortron psu
i am looking into the antec 430 and the fortron 350 120mm psu. i am looking for quiet but reliable power. i would like to get the fortron in a 400w but haven't seen one yet. i am a bit worried about the warming effect of the antec true power. any comments? whoo, first post!
Although I would not go as far as to say that 300w is enough for most people, the way the PSU allocates power is the important factor, not the maximum wattage. Your system will probably get by absolutely fine on the Fortron 350 w unless you hvae a Lot of exotic hardware (Dual CPUs, raid array, multiple DVD burners, lotta fans, etc).
From what I've read, the Fortron is very quiet and cools well (in addition to providing a not-insignificant amount of cooling for the case because the fan blows in from the CPU region) and provides sufficient power: I will post my observations in greater detail when the Fortron I ordered yesterday arrives.
Go to OC-forums.com and look around for their posts about power supplies and why systems are often percieved to have insufficient power.

The Fortron w/120mm is MUCH quieter...
Hello:
The Fortron 300watt and 350watt units with 120mm fans are going to be significantly quieter than any 1-fan Antec, let alone a 2-fan! You also might want to read the sticky at the top of this PS section about how much a good 300watt PS can run. You'd be surprised -- and the Fortrons are the best I've seen: low parts count, very neat contruction, even the case is made with good quality sheet steel that seems to not have any sharp edges. And the 120mm X 25mm Yate Loon fan is by far the quietest 120mm I have seen -- though I have not seen or heard a Panaflo L1A 120mm.
If you can use a 300watt PS and you are in the USA, then buy the Fortron/Source P300XFPN from New Egg -- they are charging just $32 with free shipping.

my use will be for the standard fare: cdrw, cd/dvd rom, nvidia 440 64MB, hdd...maybe a 2nd hdd in a year. for now i will be running a 1700 amd, but plan to bump up to a 2700/3000 barton within 2 years so i was hoping whatever psu i got would suffice through one upgrade. so a 350W should do (i'll read that psu sticky as well, thanks).

Thanks! I just ordered it from Newegg. Hopefully, it'll be quieter than my Antec TruePower 330. It emits a very annoying whine whenever my HDD runs.NeilBlanchard wrote:Hello:

Read the sticky and you'll be fine...
I think a 300watt would get you through that upgrade just fine. And in 2 years, I bet you will be lusting after an Athlon 64 or Opteron 4000+!techiecool wrote:my use will be for the standard fare: cdrw, cd/dvd rom, nvidia 440 64MB, hdd...maybe a 2nd hdd in a year. for now i will be running a 1700 amd, but plan to bump up to a 2700/3000 barton within 2 years so i was hoping whatever psu i got would suffice through one upgrade. so a 350W should do (i'll read that psu sticky as well, thanks).

GTEK said, in response to the same email, that they had Nexus and Zalman in stock, and they thought those were "silent enough", and they had no plans for new silent PSUs in the near future.Raygun wrote:OK, great. Would be even greater if someone like gtek.net or datorbutiken.com would start selling them since they tend to have lower prices than Kylning.comKylning.com claimed that they were working on getting a Fortron PSU with 120mm fan when I emailed them last week.
Well... You could put some pressure on them and email them too, so maybe they'll realise that the demand is there.

Wish I had a good db meter, then I'd test this thing compared to my other PS units.
I had a Antec Smartpower 350 (2 fan) and replaced it with the Sparkle 350 120mm. So far my system has been quite stable for over 2 days running straight folding at full load. I haven't had my system on that long in a while. With 1800+ Tbird, 3 x 80GB, 4 x 120mm fan (5V) + CPU fan. So it seems to be enough power.
Personally I wanted to resell these units since they are not widely available, but I can't get a better price than what newegg and xpdirect are selling them for now.
