No isolators, no need. Ditto 5V Panaflos. So little vibration it seems to have no benefit. Not true once you increase speed -- to say 8V+ -- but at 5V...

isolating the fan is by far the best solution here - if you don't mind potentialy voiding your warranty to do the mod. no other method is as clear and effective.
a variation of this (for regular 80mm fans), which actually may make the mod easier, is to remove the fan from inside the unit and mount it on the outside of the power supply. reports are there is less turbulence this way.

and katana is right, the dampening mats are quite useless.

Interesting. That will save me a bit of time/money.

So would you recommend fan isolators with a 120mm fan @ 5V?

I'm so jealous of you all! worrying about isolating the fortron.... I can't hear mine at all over my hard drive. But I've got my cooler hard drive in a huge foam box, which is very quiet, but I've still got a noisy 7200 RPM maxtor thats just taped on top of the foam box because of its heat. It has no temp monitoring so I'm afraid to put it in a foam box, and I have no money for a rubber box like listed here :( and of course to finish it all off my case is too small to really fit the box, its a real cram, and there's not enough room for ducting fun with the fortron fan.

MikeC, I know, I'll write an article on silencing my PC if you'll buy me a new case and a seagate barracuda! :)

Are fan isolaters the same thing as grommets?

Or are the technically different, but serve the same purpose when they are used to mount case fans in the hopes of silencing them?

IMO, the ideal use for this PSU might be with a low power dissipation CPU & large HS -- maybe the CPU could run fanless?
I was thinking more in term of just eliminating an intake or exhaust fan.
Not the sacred cpu fan. I've already given up 4 sheep and 2 chickens to that god.

My Fortron 120mm from Newegg has a repeating high-pitched whine. It gradually increases in volume, reaches a maximum then decreases, with each cycle taking approximately a minute. I am hoping that this whine will decrease over time.

Does the Fortron 300 Watt with 120mm Fan have enough power for a Pentium 4, 2.53ghz, 1Gig 2700 Memory, CD, DVD, CD-RW, Floppy, CNPS-7000Copper, 4 80mm fans or more, ATI 9500 PRO, etc...

Right now I have a 400 Seasonic, but I am not too happy with it. The fan is hardly blowing any air. My friend's exact same PSU seems to perform better than mine. The fan is stronger.

The Seasonic is designed to keep itself cool while staying very quiet as much as possible. The fan is thermally controlled. If you make it pull, say 200W DC out of it, you'll see that fan flying. Obviously, you are drawing very little power from it, which is why the fan never really speeds up.

If your friend's Seasonic PSU fan is going faster, it means his components are drawing more power from the PSU and/or the temperature in the PSU is higher, likely because of more heat or poorer airflow in his case.

Don't know why you would complain in these forums about a quieter PSU :!:

We have identical systems, but maybe it is the airflow. My wires are not too neat, but they're much worse in the other case. The PSU is very quiet, I was just worried about how it was working. Thanks.
