the swapping process itself man! Very Happy
Sorry don't have any pictures of the process itself.

Vicotnik:
You are probably right. I linked it to the controller because i thought that was the only solution. I now see that it should not be that difficult to remove that plastic shroud and connect the fan that way.

Ok, i did the fan swap the proper way today. I also have some pictures of the entire process.

So this is the first picture, the white shroud is already partly lifted:

A top shout:

Lifting the little sucker:

It actually took me some time as it is hard to reach and grab. I used pliers and a nail file for the job:

Finally of, after about 5 minutes:

The fan attached:

This is something i did as well:

Hi Kato,

That PSU mod looks great!
I was wondering what kind of system you're using.
Is so power hungry that you got annoyed by the PSU fan revving up or was it too noisy even while idle?

I also have a VX450 and am happy with the noise when the system is idle.
On load however the PSU is far too noisy.
If a fanmod could lower the noise even on higher loads I might just void my warranty :D

Thanks for the compliment.

I am using an older system:

X2 4200 939 (TDP 89W) @2600Mhz
3870 graphics card small overclock
2gb ram
250gb WD laptop disk 5400rpm
Creative eXtreme Music sound card
TV tuner card
2 Nexus fans
Vista Ultimate 32bit SP1

To answer your question it is not a power hungry machine. The fan in the PSU was way too loud even at idle. When i first installed it i had 2 extra 3,5" disks in and the PSU was the loudest part in my PC.

It is possible that mine was defected because i cant imagine that people on this site would call this thing quite. My friend ordered the 550W unit and it has the same problem. I don't know if we got some bad units but as we had ordered them from another country it just didn't make any sense to send them back.

If you should void your warranty that is something you have to decide for yourself. For me it was fairly simple as i was not going to send it back anyway. What i can tell you is that at idle it is more or less silent, my two Nexus fans make more noise. And at load i don't hear it because when i play games i increase the voltage of the fan that is blowing on my graphics card from 6 to 9V.

I for one am very happy that i did this. The PSU is now close to silent and the air that is being vented (not much air) is cool. :D

Sorry about the necroposting but is the 1200rpm SlipStream (SY1225SL12M) still a good choice for a fan swap? I'll connect the yellow lead to the motherboard fan header and will be glad to report the figures should anyone be interested. :)

I don't really believe the Slipstream 1200 rpm is quiet enough at 5 V, which is the minimum most motherboards will allow. The 800 or 500 rpm would be a better option IMO.

I've personally swapped the fan of the Corsair CX400W (the EXACT same as the VX450W, safe some few components) with the 1200 rpm 120 mm Slipstream. At 5 V it was jsut a tad too loud, so I undervolted it even further using more than one resistor. The exhaust air from my PSU is very very cool when using folding@home.

I guess the CX400W wants to spin up the fan at lower loads. The data I'm seeing for VX450 is 4V <250W load. By 300W it's at ~6V.

Since this got bumped, let me re-state my question with my specific concern in mind:
Anyone know a 120mm fan that can run reliably and silently at 4V?

The be quiet! SilentWings 120 USC from sources such as http://www.aquatuning.se/product_info.p ... 25mm-.html has a 3.5v start voltage.

That looks pretty awesome, at least on paper. Do you happen to know how the SilentWings plays with grills?

Still leaning toward the Slipstream 1200rpm model since it's a proven silent performer. Anyone wanna tell me more about the implications of non-horizontal mounting for this fan?
