Silent EPS12V power supply? Fortron FSP460-60PFN?
I want to build a workstation and will need an EPS12V power supply. I'd like to buy a Fortron 460W EPS12V supply:

Is there anybody with first hand experience with this power supply? Are there any other silent alternatives?

I think "Silenx" PSUs are available with at least that much power these days, from exoticpc.com or silenx.com.
I would expect that the Fortron-branded one you mention would not be especially quiet, but would be stoutly made with big heatsinks so you could modify it for lower airflow without harming it. I'm only guessing though, based on what I've read.

I think I'll buy the Antex True550EPS12V then. I don't think there's much to choose from if EPS12V is a requirement, an at least Antec claims that the fan speed is optimized for noise.
I noticed that the Fortron has OPTIONAL noise control, so buying a Fortron and hoping for the best is probably too optimistic. I have the impression that most EPS12V power supplies are just rebranded Fortron power supplies.
Too bad that Fortron doesn't make a ESP12V version of their 12 cm fan power supply.

Do not buy a Sparkle/FSP/SPI PSU based on the "Noise Killer" bit,
because it is largely useless. It will be slightly muted at start up, but
very rapidly gets much noisier - the fans aren't low noise or top-end.
The noise-killer on rack 1U PSUs is hilarious.
From startup you hear a gradual increase into a tornado.

Perhaps you've all overlooked my review of a 550W Antec TrueControl PSU. The noise level of all the AntecTrue___ PSUs seems to be the same. Modest.
Will take a look.
Antec are a good brand - in terms of engineering underneath it.
2U rack cases are staging a comeback re Dual/Quad Opteron.
It's interesting because they are increasingly dispensing with the
2U power supply form factor in favour of the standard ATX PSUs.
Antec's new rack case range in particular has moved this way, and
indicates how standard ATX PSUs are increasingly going to be filling
the industrial 24/7 niche in terms of engineered quality in volume.
That is good for general consumers who can get the same kind of
PSU quality - and for buyers. A 460W ATX PSU is ~70ukp, whereas
the same in 2U will set you back 200ukp and in 1U around 280-300ukp.
The old divergence of 2U-PSU for industrial quality & ATX consumer is
now cycling back into convergence which could see some changes in
ATX PSU design and cooling. I know dual Opteron spec's 670W and a
quad-Opteron/Itanium2 1200W preferably in dual configuration.
Products that can span Industrial & Consumer segments is good for
quality - both in terms of noise, cooling & general reliability re PC PSUs.
Will read the review in the a.m. Thanks.

From the pictures on Antecs web site I concluded that the ATX and EPS12V might be the same power supply, except for the connectors.
I actually need this power supply for a new dual opteron system I'm building, I guess it will be challenging to get it quiet. It will probably take a couple of weeks before I have all the parts, I'll let you know what I think of it.
