I know there's the proprietary 4-pin signal issue but has anyone tried working round this? It still results in an amount of electricity coming out which is varied to control fan speed, right? What is there that prevents a little rewiring to give a variable signal that would work with, say, an NF-S12B?

Hi, my Enermax Modu 82+ 625W is also starting to sound louder. I can hear the fan clearly it´s like a constant buzz, and I also hear like if you were making "popcorn"... pop pop....

It´s strange as it´s a very expensive PSU.

I had the Corsair HX620 but changed it for this one because I had a coil whine with my Gigabyte EX58-UD4P motherboard.

What PSU do you suggest will not make this noises... I don´t want to loose more money with this...

Wait for the new Seasonic 80Plus Gold certified PSUs

The fans in them aren't supposed to even turn on under 20% load.

I'll be switching out my noise Modu82+ 625 with one when they come out.

I made an identical post in the modu82+ review thread, but since it applies here as well:

I have had the modu82+ 625W for about 7 months now, and since the 1m mark it has had a dull grinding noise coming from the fan. You can actually hear the fan spin up and down. Recently it has degraded into a sort of persistent 'chirping' noise, which is driving me insane. Contacted Enermax support just now, we'll see how that goes.

Just updating with what I've found, Enermax recommends that I RMA the unit and get a new one. I would have to pay return shipping for the unit, and being that this is the only psu that can power my computer at the moment I would have to also do a cross-ship (I get the replacement before shipping the defective unit back) at an additional cost of $25.

Basically I'd be paying ~$30-35 to get an identical unit with theoretically identical problems, so I think I will go the path of replacing the fan with a nonvariable speed fan, as it will be cheaper. It is sad that such an expensive psu would have problems so early in its life cycle.

For about a month I've been using the computer with the psu out, it looks kind of like the case just spilled its guts onto the floor. I found with the enermax on its side, the fan noise went away. Until today.

So I voided my warranty and opened up the psu, it is actually a very straightforward and painless procedure to replace the fan. About 3 minutes after I started, I now have a Noctua P12 fan running inside my psu.

It is a bit louder than the Enermax was thanks to it being nonvariable in speed, but it really beats the heck out of having that irritating rubbing noise.

My fan doesn't connect to the psu itself but to the motherboard. You just run the cable through the fan grill, the Nexus fan I used had a cutout where the cable would fit through.

Another crappy Enermax Pro82+

Post by willmaltby » Wed Oct 28, 2009 8:09 am

Hi, my first post here, just thought I'd chime in with my noisy enermax Pro82+ 625W.

This thing is barely a day old and it's already making an annoying 'whishpery' noise from the fan. It's the loudest thing in my case by far and gets worse as the load increases and it gets louder. It's quiet for like 2 minutes on first boot, after that I can hear it over everything else. I should note that I watercool pretty much everything and I'd say my PC is quieter than most, but even so, the PSU should not be this loud.

This is far, FAR from the silent PSU it is supposed to be. I get the feeling Enermax sent out the cream of the cream to the review sites whilst us everyday folk get the average crap which just doesn't live up to the same standard.

I've made a video recording of it on my phone and uploaded it here:

Image
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/margaret.l ... ax_625.mp4

(I have not modified the video in anyway, it's straight from my Sony Ericsson K850i)

You can clearly hear what I call the 'whishpering' sound or 'chirping' noise as some else noted.

It's appalling.

I'm RMAing this and getting a Corsair 650TX unless anyone can recommend a better psu in that price range.

Just for reference my PC specs are;

Q6700 @ 3.6ghz @ 1.43v
Asus P5QL-E (P43)
Geforce 8800GTS 512 @ 1.42 core, 2.13v mem
3 hard drives
1 Laing DDC+ pump

hardly a beast of a machine. The PC had been running prime95 for a few mins prior to the video being made.

Probably it should be noted somewhere in the review that there are bad samples cause I also suffered from one. I could have bought a lot less noisy PSU for a third of that price. It spins at 600-700RPM and it's clicking badly. Given the complicated fan replacement procedure I'm already looking into selling mine.

well it's certainly been a long time since i posted here... i just grabbed an enermax modu82+ 625w for my new core i7 rig (after over 2 years with a non-silenceable laptop... what was i thinking??) and am keen to see how it fares re fan buzzing/ticking noises. the psu is still on the SPCR editor's choice list so i'm hoping the unfotunate problems experienced thus far are isolated cases...

PSU is up and running - no noises so far. can't hear it at all above the (soon-to-be-replaced) stock intel CPU HSF.

one thing to note though is that the PCI-E cable took aaages to connect to the PSU - the pins refused to line up! i had to press the connector in whilst jiggling all 12 wires before it played nice...

Hi everybody...good thing I saw this thread before it was too late...

Since I was about to upgrade my PSU (my current one is a LC Power Silent 550W) with an Enermax Modu82+ 625W, now I'm really unsure wht to choose...My budget is like 100€...so...how about Corsair 650HX? Please don't tell me that PSU has also fan problems... :?

BeQuiet E7, 480/580/680 watts available with modular cabling, and an even wider choice without. Good, expensive fans inside those units, and reliable as well, all while being cheaper than these overpriced Enermax units. Can't go wrong with any of those.

Come si dice qui:

WELCOME TO SPCR!

Each and every PSU have some problem. Don't worry too much for this.

Anyway, there's plenty of choice: have you already seen the SPCR Recommended list?

For that amount you may currently buy in Italy the Cooler Master Silent Pro M700 or M850, or the Sea Sonic S12D-750, the Enermax Libery Eco 500 and 620 (different fan), or the Silverstone DA750... and a lot of Sea Sonic or Corsair for much less.

It actually depends on your requirements: which rig do you have, what do you do with it, and so on.

Ciao,
Luca

Wow...didn't expect replies that fast :D

@quest_for_silence (Luca)
Ciao...piacere di conoscerti :) and no, I have yet to see this "SPCR Recommended list" (could u link it?)...but I did based my choices on this list...

My current rig is configured as follows:
PSU: LC-POWER SILENT 550W
CASE: Thermaltake Lanbox Lite
CPU: AMD Phenom II 720BE (*1)
CPU HS: Thermaltake MaxOrb EX
GPU: Gainward HD4850@512MB + A.C. Acc. S1 Rev.2 (*2)
HDD01: Seagate 80GB 7200rpm
HDD02: Maxtor 500GB 7200rpm
RAM: 2x2GB OCZ Reaper DDR2@1066Mhz
MOBO: GIGABYTE AM2+ MA78GM-S2H v.1.1
OS:WIN 7 H.P. (64 bit)
Monitor: Acer 17" 1280X1024 (*3)
2x90mm fans
2x60mm fans

*1 At the moment default frequency, but I think I will speed it up to at least 3.2GHz soon, I have already mirror lapped it just to be sure (MX3 TC applied)
*2 I will upgrade to a 40nm GPU (probably ATI 5850 or 5830) maybe this year already...
*3 I will upgrade to a 1680x1024 monitor soon...

I use it pretty much for gaming and net browsing...

On with the PSUs prices:
Cooler Master Silent Pro M700 at 99€ seems ok but 700W is still too much don't you think? M850...off budget and too much power

Sea Sonic S12D-750 at 128€ it's still too powerfull for my needs plus it's nonmodular...

Enermax Liberty 620 looks solid...good pricing and it's modular ( the 500W won't do)

Silverstone DA750...looks ok but still off budget...

@Parappaman
Ciao...the BeQuiet E7 580 looks great...modular and very price competitive, found it at 89,50€ on an on-line shop. BeQuie states a "high energy efficiency of up to 88%...not bad, any reviews on this one?
About BeQuiet I know their fans are one of the best...the one one used by this PSU looks like the 120mm Be Quiet! Silent Wings USC series.

@chylld
well glad to here that mate...you must be one of the lucky ones. It's good to know that this "noisy enermax fan phenomena" is pretty much RANDOM...if this may be the case , I'm not willing to bet my 100 cash on this "roulette" :P cheers

ice_v, please take note that your requests here are OT, so this is my last answer in this thread.
ice_v wrote:(could u link it?)

I guess that probably you've already found it, right now.

However, here it is.
ice_v wrote:but I did based my choices on this list

With reference to my experience, that list seems a bit outdated and somewhat weird.

Just as examples:
  • it misses a lot of the so called "Gold" models
the Seasonic S12/M12 are the same PSU but, above all, they have been phased out/EOL/discontinued
the HX and the Zalmans are sensibly noisier than all other "Gold" PSUs
the Corsair VX and TX are about on par with the HX
while the Antec Earth Watts or NeoHE (mostly discontinued) simply cannot match them
And so on.

The system seems a bit on the loud side of life (I mean you could, first of all, think to swap the cpu heatsink and some case fans, which seem maybe too many).

And it's hot, in such a cramped space.
ice_v wrote:On with the PSUs prices:

The M850 is 112 euros (Mapasa). About the power you're right, the less is often more, but you have also to consider some headroom (plus your rig isn't particularly efficient: just the GPU may sucks from the PSU about 130W, the 5830 is about 160W peak) and the need for some higher performance on the +5 and +5VSB rails.
ice_v wrote:Sea Sonic S12D-750 at 128€ it's still too powerfull for my needs plus it's nonmodular

The S12D is priced at 112 euros (fastshopping.eu), but if you need a modular one there's the M12D at 132 euros (so you may run a bit out of budget with it). It's also over 81% efficient at 15% load.
ice_v wrote:Silverstone DA750...looks ok but still off budget
If I'm not wrong the Decathlons are 99 euros the 650W, while 116 euros the 750W (Planet-Computer.it)

Hope this helps.

Due to all the fan issues with this PS, SPCR should post a disclaimer under their review so that potential buyers are aware of the ongoing issues.

It's just good PR.

Whispery noise. Yeah, I had that from day one. The PSU is the most noisy component in my computer (I have my hard drive in a Scythe quiet drive enclosure). When I hold my hand to block the grill, the noise is far less annoying. So I'm sure it is the PSU's fan (I even disconnected all the other fans and the hard drive to hear it better).

I'm pretty disapointed too atm. I can live with the noise but if it weren't there my setup would be virutally silent.

I can only recommend NOT buying this PSU for a slilent build. The review does not correspond with reality I'm afraid.

Very intrusive whispering here too. Modu82+ 525W.

Never ever ever going to touch enermax again. What a waste of money.

I have solved my problem in several hours since I had faced it. Just found out that the noise was produced by a resonating body of psu. if i removed a fan and held it in my hand it was vibrating but still was noiseless. so...

ImageImageImage

I used Armaflex for this. Now PSU is noiseless again.

I recently switched to a new case (Raven 2) and started to wonder why the hell is my new build so loud. After a bit of wondering I realized that the Enermax PSU's fan makes all the noise in my pc! When I stop the fan everything is suddendly quiet. What a crap quality, I never had a quality fan fail, I suppose Enermax didn't use quality fans then...

The noise is a bit like coil whine, relatively high pitched and very very annoying. Maybe I should send the unit to warranty. I think it still has a few months left... Since I don't want to be without a PSU for a week or two I'll get a new one and sell whatever replacement I get.

After 4 years my Enermax Modu82+ is still going and although the whispering noises freuqnetly mentioned had started, in the last week these turned into a chirping noise which was much more distracting. Opening up the PSU and cleaning the fan out with WD40 has got rid of both noises. I do wonder if it's just the bearing being quite susceptible to dust ingress.

Another month and a half down the line and more troubles. Was using the computer today, heard a bit of a 'fizzing' noise, then the computer went off. Nothing from the PSU. Opened it up, the fuse was dead. Swapped the fuse over, still nothing, another blown fuse. It looks terminal. Really disappointed it went with so little ceremony as I've never had a PSU blow before. No smoke, no burning smell, no loud bang. Oh the irony that I have yet again pulled out of retirement an old P3 system made of leftovers powered by a PSU that's over 15 years old and am using this as we speak:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=51604

Having taken it all apart it looks like something isn't right with one of the small components wedged in between the big coils and heatsinks.

The Enermax Modu42+ is rubbish.

Next up is what to buy as a replacement and hope it didn't take anything like the HDD down with it...
