APFC vs non PFC?

Post by lodger_001 » Wed Jun 11, 2003 1:10 am

I'm looking for a new PS, hopefully a quiet one, and I'm thinking about either getting the Zalman 300w PS or the Fortron P300XFPN. I'm somewhat leaning towards the Fortron, mainly because it's $40+ cheaper than the Zalman. But I've read that the Fortron uses a non PFC system, and that non PFC power supplies aren't really recommended anymore. What's the downside of using nonPFC? is active pfc far superior? how do these PSU's compare noisewise?

also, how reliable are the Zalman power supplies? I just had my old power supply (Antec 350w) kamikaze on me after having it for less than a year. It took out my mother board and one hard drive with it...hoping to avoid that happening again. :(
