PSUs: The source of DC power for all components in the PC & often a big noise source.

How heavy is a Fortron - P300XFPN 300W 120mm Power Supply?

I wish to import this psu from the US, as I can't find it here in the UK. I have a friend that will ship it over, but I need to work out rough shipping costs.

Could anyone give me an estimate of what this psu and box weighs?

Regards,

Duncan :)

I'd say 1,5 kg for bare PSU, maybe up to 2,5 kg with all packaging. Note that the US version doesn't have PFC, so it would be "illegal" to use it in Europe. I do have a feeling that You do know this though...

Cheers,

Jan

Thanks :)

If the packaging is that heavy, then I might get him to wrap it in bubble wrap and sen it in a smaller box.

Thanks again for the information :)

As for the PFC, I won't tell if you don't ;)

In any case have your friend put some packing in the box with the PSU (a quick wrap of bubble film would do). Mine came with only the power cord in the box and had enough room to bounce around in there! Mine was OK after the trip from Calif. to the East Coast.

I'm fairly sure that the packaging is not that heavy. It's just a regular cardboard box.

The box the Fortron comes in has no extra space and no padding, so a significantly larger additional box is necessary for shipping if you don't want it damaged when it arrives.

Um... I meant the total weight with all extra padding & stuff, plus some overhead (as Duncan asked about the shipping fees).

When newegg ship it in the US, do they put it in another box, or do they just send the regular psu box on it's own? :) The blue box on newegg looked pretty big :)

They shipped mine inside another box-

The blue box it comes in is only about a 6 inch cube.

Ah good :) 8)

Weight appears to be the most important factor with international shipping, so I should be able to get away with him forwarding the box into me.

Cheers folks :P

I believe I read on this site that the PF version is louder than the non PF..

edit: here's the thread: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=3607

I very nearly bought that psu from The Overclocking Store, but luckily the bank balance said otherwise that month. :)

FYI - Weight is the most important factor for a small square box. The size will not really matter for any country.

Size does start to matter if you start sending things in long boxes or direct shipping unusual mail shaped articles not boxed like automobile tires (I know, not computer related only example in my head as we had allot of tires come in this morning.) Different countries near each other also have different pricing on sizes + weight. Just FYI.

I hear having a greasy, misshapen packed with a wire or two sticking out can really help things along.

  Yeah, that can really help things along.

My personal most recent favorite was a package with a half open bag of potato starch that opened in transit so that if you grabbed or sat the box down fast "white powder" came out the seams of the box.

That really helped things along. I even got to enjoy a bleach shower out in the parking lot that day. Fun, fun, fun.
