which pico psu for this system[?]

Post by nirvanaguy19 » Tue Nov 10, 2009 3:38 am

I have the following mini-itx system
motherboard d945gclf2 (atom 330 )
with 3 3.5" hdd (one wd green and the other 2 regular seagate 7200 rpm hdds)
1 pc sata adapter

would a 90w or 120w pico psu be sufficient for this system

Should be enough 90W version, though it's close to the limit. Storage start(spin) up takes: ~2A x 12V = 24W = 24W x 3 = 72W. And Intel D945GCLF2 has just 16W max wattage.

Is more like double only the North bridge + south bridge + Atom 330 max TDP is 33.5W so I will not expect less than 28W from this board at idle with nothing connected but the board and RAM.
See Link
The 90W and 120W PicoPSU have the same spec except for the 12V line the most power will be used on the 5V line and on the 12V line you will get some load mostly at startup (don't know the exact HDD you have but with 3HDD and a SATA PCI adapter I will probably go for the 120W PicoPSU or if you have enough space for one of my PSUs).

Damn, you right! :o I mixed up the desktop 945GC(on D945GCLF2) with mobile version 945GSE.

You should take 120W picoPSU version. The chipset is a way hot - 20-40W consumption, depending on load.

Yes, very nice set. If you aren't sure it will power up your configuration w/o problems ask directly Mini-box.com staff for some advice on it. They must know much better their own hardware. Here we can suggest you only theoretically, and basing on similar cases.

I have one of them powering a 780G MicroATX motherboard, AMD 4200+, 3.5" HDD, DVDRW and 1 120mm fan. I also have the 120W version powering an Atom 270 ITX motherboard with 2 x 3.5" HDD and 1 120mm fan.

Apparently those power bricks have a fan that comes on at 90W load, but neither of my systems have triggered this fan.

I have the same board with 1 x 2.5 hdd, and 1 x optic drive. For this build picopsu 90w is enough, with a 60w powerbrick.
Average power load is around 28w, with a peak of 31w.

As stated by others, for you build would be safer picopsu120w.
