What about Fractal Design Tesla PSU?

Post by Telvas » Sun Jan 30, 2011 12:10 pm

I'm new here, so "Hi everybody" :)

I need some quiet PSU with some decent performance and affordable price.
I was thinking about Corsair VX450 - but recently it disappeared from literally all of "my" (e-)shops.

So I searched for something similar (or maybe even better - VX450 is quite old one).
I found Fractal Design Tesla (and only one reliable review of it (google-translated SWE->ENG): http://translate.googleusercontent.com/ ... Q#pagehead).
Some people say it's ATNG, just like Nexus, and it's probably much same design, silence and efficiency. Can anybody confirm/deny this?

Is Tesla really so quiet and efficient?
What else can you recommend? I need about 500W.

IMO there's plenty of choice: just to mention something listed by ascending prices (or so about...)
  • Seasonic S12-II 520W (might it be the less quiet among these listed PSUs? Probably good up to the 200-250W DC power level)
  • CoolerMaster Silent Pro 500M (if you stay under 200W DC of typical power usage)
  • Enermax ECO 80-II 400W (if you stay under 150W DC of typical power usage)
  • Seasonic S12-II 620W (might it be the less quiet among these listed PSUs? Probably good up to the 200-250W DC power level)
  • Seasonic M12-II 520W (might it be the less quiet among these listed PSUs? Probably good up to the 200-250W DC power level)
  • Nexus Value 430 (not exceptionally built but very much quiet)
  • Seasonic M12-II 620W (might it be the less quiet among these listed PSUs? Probably good up to the 200-250W DC power level)
  • Antec TruePower 650 New (some allegedly reliability issues pointed out mostly on newegg, quiet up to 300W DC of typical power usage)
  • CoolerMaster Silent Pro 600M (if you stay under 200W DC of typical power usage)
  • Enermax Pro82+ 425W (some doubts about its fan, pretty quiet up to 300W DC of typical power usage)
  • Enermax ECO 80-II 500W (if you stay under 150W DC of typical power usage)
  • Enermax Pro82+ 525W (some doubts about its fan, pretty quiet up to 300W DC of typical power usage)
  • Enermax Modu82+ 425W (some doubts about its fan, pretty quiet up to 300W DC of typical power usage)
  • Nexus NX5000 R3 (perhaps my favourite, if around 100USD)
  • CoolerMaster Silent Pro 700M (way much overpowered, if you stay under 200W DC of typical power usage)
  • XFX Core Edition 750W (way much overpowered, very promising but strictly an unproven design)
  • Enermax Modu82+ 525W (some doubts about its fan, pretty quiet up to 300W DC of typical power usage)
  • XFX Black Edition 750W (way much overpowered, one of my favourites up to a 400W DC power level)
  • Antec TruePower 750 New (way much overpowered, some allegedly reliability issues pointed out mostly on newegg, quiet up to 300W DC of typical power usage)
  • Antec CP-850 (only if you have an Antec P183/P193, but way quieter up to a 500W DC power level)
  • Seasonic X-560 (maybe the best under 300-400W, but maybe about twice the cost of a VX-450)
  • Seasonic X-400FL (fanless, indestructible, very expensive)
  • Enermax Modu87+ 500W (probably overpriced as many top-of-the-line Enermax, among the bests under 400-500W)
  • Seasonic X-460FL (fanless, indestructible, very expensive)

IME/IMO all the above mentioned PSU are noticeably quieter (someone, as the XFX Core, *should* be quieter AFAIK) up to the indicated (if any) power level, than the original Corsair VX-450 (and at anyway quieter above that limit).

Due to the original retail price of the VX-450, I think that anything above the Nexus NX5000 R3 may be probably too much expensive (with reference to your supposed budget), but as the FD Teslas should come for around 100USD, it might even not be so.

Thanks for answer :)
Among all those I was already considering Nexus NX-5000/Value 430 (but it's difficult to get them in Poland and if you find some, they are much overpriced, BOTH (!) for about $115 + shipping) and Seasonic S12II-520 (which is, as you said, a bit louder, and won't be even half-loaded in my system).

Comparing this to my power demand and price comparison I think I go for this Fractal Design Tesla 450W :) It's a bit less than $90 and is easily available in my city. My system should draw no more than 250-300W in peak, so 450W will perfectly fit :)

Let's hope this quite cryptic PSU will perform nice and quietly :D

So how is this PSU?
I read here that the internally it's "almost" the same as Nexus NX-5000.
I'm considering getting it because it's the closest thing to my budget - exceeds it by almost 10 € already, but the second closest thing (said Nexus) is another 15...
