Help me, Seasonic X/Platinum or Corsair AX?

Post by Izzo » Mon Feb 10, 2014 6:07 pm

Hi!

My rig:

-Intel i7-4770k (I'll do overcloking in future)
-Asus maximus hero
-Noctua NH-U14s
-Corsair 2x8gb 16gb 1866 DDR3
-GTX 770 (I'll sell and change it for an equivalent of GTX 780ti or better in 2-3 years)
-SSD Samsung 840 evo 250gb + HDD Seagate 1tb 7200rpm
-Fractal R4 (+1 front fan 14cm)
-Asus Xonar DG
-LG 24" IPS FullHD

Maybe 650W is overkill although I prefer a little more 750W for have a few more of room in any case. I can't decide about these PSU's (all with 7 years warranty):

-Seasonic X-750 (~138€)
-Seasonic Platinum 660 (~132€)
-Seasonic Platinum 760 (~150€)
-Corsair AX760 (~134€)

I like more the Seasonics aesthetically, and also I would like avoid have coil whine if it's possible (I have read many issues about the corsair AX760 especially and it could have more risk of whine than the seasonics) but usually I guess it's just a matter of luck. So the Platinum 760 compared with the X-750 worth it for 12€ more? and compared with the others? which of them could have less issues and coil whine?

Any advice will help me, thanks! :D

Welcome to SPCR.

Your stressed load power is 84W (CPU) + call it 250W worst case future GPU + 50W for everything else. So, less than 400W. More likely 300-325W gaming. You could easily go with a 650W class PSU. While the fan would ramp while gaming, you wouldn't hear it over the gfx card's fans.

Seasonic makes the Corsair AX760.
Coil whine is a YMMV issue. Some people are lucky, others aren't, with the same model PSU.
As you are in Europe, here's a couple more to choose from: Be Quiet Dark Power Pro10, Superflower Golden King.

Thanks.

The be quiet dark pro 10 650W worth 131€ (same than the seasonic platinum 660), and the 750W 160€ (too expensive), in addition I don't like much the look of their cables.

Then of all these seasonics and the corsair, which have better offer and the lower price than usual in other stores? and if the budget is not a problem and thinking only in quality, which would you choose?

<shrugs> I've been lucky with all of my Seasonic and Corsair branded Seasonic PSUs. I'd go Platinum 660. You get the Platinum efficiency and semi-passive fan profile. The higher wattage PSU may buy you a slower fan at similar gaming loads. But, like I said, the Gfx card will be louder and at idle and low loads the 660 will be more efficient.

Buy the PSU from a vendor with a decent returns policy...just in case.

Oh, there is also the Corsair RM series. Gold rated and their big tout is no electrical noise.

Cooler Master V700, providing it's cheaper.
